i mis-clicked the other night while online and ended up with a smitfraud virus. norton, a^2, bugbear, ect wouldn't get rid of it and i couldn't connect long enough to run an online scan. i ran hijack this, got rid of a bunch of files that the log scan thing said to, followed the directions on another post and got rid of the svcnut.exe problem, cleaned everything up and i'm thinking all is good. then i re-start the computer like it said. now i my wall paper is set to black with no option to change it (the desktop properties are all gone with the exception of screen saver and settings and you can't access it in the control pannel). i figured i'd jump online and see if it would a) stay online for more than 45 seconds and b) try to download the rest of the stuff to run and do an online virus scan. it worked for about 3 minutes before my pages stopped loading and it wouldn't let me disconnect. i had to unplug my computer to keep it from doing it all over again.

i would really like to fix whatever is wrong since my laptop isn't good for much besides text/word files and i'm horrified to back any of my programs and files up for fear of keeping a bug.

please help? or at least tell me if i should give up and toss the dang thing out the window?

    Please do the following:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

Your OS and IE versions are way out of date and represent a major security risk to you. You must get updated when we fix your current problems.

First goto Add/Remove programs (in Control Panel) and uninstall the below if found:
    Istsvc or ISTbar
    DMVlite
    Security iGuard

Please run HijackThis and click on the "Open the Misc Tools Section" button on the open page. Then select "Open process manager" on the left-hand side. Look for the following process (or processes) and one at a time kill them by selecting it and then click "Kill process". Then click yes.
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\UpdateXP2.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\hnryv.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\ap9h4qmo.exe
    C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\ixsext32.exe

After killing all the above processes, click "Back".
Then please click "Scan" and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tibs3] C:\WINDOWS\System32\tibs3.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [USB Driver4] UpdateXP2.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Security iGuard] C:\Program Files\Security iGuard\Security iGuard.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dFd2kD] C:\WINDOWS\hnryv.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [etbrun] C:\windows\system32\eliteycr32.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ws7W3pj] lfbclien.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ap9h4qmo] C:\WINDOWS\System32\ap9h4qmo.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [bO²ùð\×y-¯Œ] C:\WINDOWS\hnryv.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [bO²ùõö/ØG%)ßfÏNb½¾C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe] C:\WINDOWS\hnryv.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IST Service] C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [USB Driver4] UpdateXP2.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [USB Driver4] UpdateXP2.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [hBo6RfH5j] ixsext32.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\tibs3.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\UpdateXP2.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\hnryv.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\ap9h4qmo.exe
    C:\Program Files\ISTsvc <--- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\Security iGuard <--- the whole folder
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\ixsext32.exe
C:\windows\system32\eliteycr32.exe <-- also look for any other files beginning with elite and ending with .exe and delete them too.
    C:\windows\system32\lfbclien.exe

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST). Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.

Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log. And tell us how things are working.

I went through and followed the directions, but the following files weren't listed.
    C:\WINDOWS\hnryv.exe
    C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [bO²ùõö/ØG%)ßfÏNb½¾C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe] C:\WINDOWS\hnryv.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IST Service] C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\tibs3.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\hnryv.exe
    C:\Program Files\ISTsvc
    C:\Program Files\Security iGuard
    C:\windows\system32\eliteycr32.exe
    C:\windows\system32\lfbclien.exe

I'm still getting a "LSA Shell (Export Version)" pop up everytime I get online, and right after it gives me a shut down notice initiated by nt authority\system c:\windows\systeem32\lsass.exe and shuts me down in 60 seconds. After I restart the computer (or it restarts me) it will connect online but something kicks on in the background and won't allow the browsers to load or me to disconnect. The only way to get it off-line is to unplug the modum. After it's unpluged I have to restart the computer before I can get online again.

I should just throw it out the window, huh?

That's more than likely because you do not have your Windows Updates! Try giving the below tool a run:

    Symantec W32.Blaster.Worm Removal Tool
    Symantec W32.Sasser Removal Tool

Then start completing the steps in the below link. The first step is to get your Microsoft Updates. There will be a lot of them! Take a few at a time only to make sure you do not have problems with the 60 second shutdown.

How to Protect yourself from malware!
