I need some help uninstalling Norton Systemworks (NSW) 2005 version.
I am unable to uninstall it via the Add/Remove programs and I have tried following Removing Norton SystemWorks 2005 in Windows XP/2000 after Add/Remove Programs does not work I get as far as step 2 where it tells me how to remove NSW from the registry well when I click on NSW2005_XP_REG_V6.reg to download that tool or whatever it is I get a fp.symantec.com can not be found when trying with my Firefox browser and with IE I get a Page Cannot Be Displayed Error.
How can I uninstall NSW2005 from my computer so I can do a clean boot and reinstall a fresh clean copy from my CD?

A little background on why I need to uninstall it..
When I click on "View Quarantined Items" in my NAV it gives me an error message "Error creating quarantine object. Please reinstall Norton AntiVirus" I contacted Symantec for help in this and they informed me that Norton Antivirus program update was released to fix this problem. To install the update, run LiveUpdate, download the program update, and then restart the computer when prompted.
Well here is what I have done to try and fix this problem..
    1. My Computer is up to date thru Windows Updates
    2. My Liveupdate is up to date
    3. I have tried to uninstall just Norton Antivirus and reinstall it only and that did not work.
    4. I have tried to uninstall NSW 2005 completely from my computer via Add/Remove Programs and that would not work I got an error message. I can't remember what it said exactly but mainly that the uninstall failed. (I need to reboot my computer so I will try that again and repost the error message on here).
    5. Per email from Symantec I tried to work through Removing Norton SystemWorks 2005 in Windows XP/2000 after Add/Remove Programs does not work and got as far as Step #2 as I can not download the item to remove NSW from the registry.
    6. I have also completely "dumped" my computer in which I returned it to like new state and reinstalled the programs etc., updated my computer thru Windows Updates, and made sure my NSW & NPF 2005 live updates were complete and repeated #4 & #5 and still can't get NSW2005 off my computer.

    Help!!!!!!!!!

    sw:)

ps. If I have confused anyone I apologize I am just at my wits end in trying to get an error message removed and the uninstall process won't work either.. :(:(

sorry had a typo it should be ftp.symantec.com could not be found. please check the name and try again.

All I am doing is clicking on the link provided by Symantec Knowledge Base to try and get the item downloaded to be able to remove NSW from the registry per symantec's instructions. Here is the link that I am trying to access in Step #2 NSW2005_XP_REG_V6.reg
of Removing Norton SystemWorks 2005 in Windows XP/2000 after Add/Remove Programs does not work

Now as for the error message when trying to Uninstall via Add/Remove Programs:

My message is Norton System Works 2005 uninstallation failed try again? and gives me 3 options Abort Retry Ignore. When I click Retry I get the same Error Message why I click Abort it tells me The Uninstallation encountered an error and was unable to remove the application.

    thanks

You've tried all the obvious and recommended suggestions.

I have that .reg file if that will help and can send it via messenger if you have it or email attachment maybe?

Yes I have tried the suggestions emailed to me by Symantec.

The told me to run Live Update and that would give me the fix they put out for the problem. My LiveUpdates are up to date and current.

They told me to uninstall NSW via Add/Remove programs I tried that and it wouldn't allow me to do it and I got that error message as I mentioned previously.

The next step was to go through the steps on Removing NSW 2005 in XP after Add/Remove Progams does not work and I can't get the NSW2005_XP_REG_V6.reg to download in step 2 so I can remove NSW from the registry. That is what I have to get done before I can complete anything else as from what I have read these steps are the only thing that will allow me to remove NSW from my system.

I will pvt you my email addy so you can send me the exe and see if that works.
    Thanks..
    sw:)

well after I posted all this the link finally worked tonight for me to download it.. I will continue the rest of the steps as outlined per symantec and see what happens and post back with the results.. thanks again :):):)

This is totally becoming a nightmare :(:(:(

I got through all the steps provided by Symantec and went to reinstall NSW2005 and now I am missing an installation file of instopts.dat

To top it off my Norton Personal Firewall was activated but now I no longer have that as it says I didn't activate my product and the trial period has expired.

I am beginning to HATE norton products.

I may just use the freebies provided in MG downloads and say to heck with Norton.. I wasted my money on NSW 2005 and NPF 2005 for nothing but a headache..

So since both the NSW & NPF tell me that I am missing the instopts.dat how do I get them off my computer without having to completely "dump" my computer???

thanks for any help anyone can give me as I am at wits end..

    sw:)

As a former Norton User I confess i am biased but you sure are no advert for Symantec. Here's what Iwould do short of formating and getting all the nasties out that way.
Delete every reference otf Nortonand/or Symantec out of the registry. It's one helluva job but it worked for me. Delete all the Norton/Symantec files etc from your hard drive. Check your Startup and make sure that there is no ref to Norton there. Reboot - Use a reg cleaner to clean out your registry
Install either Avast or AVG - good antivir freebies
Install a free firewall - I use Kerio there may be others and indeed I think AVG comes with a firewall
Others here may have better solutions but thats what I finished up doing. Even after I dug out all the registry stuff the reboot found a whole load more of Symantec crap - it was spread everywhere in registry.
Good Luck and I hope this helps

The problem is that's impossible to manually remove most Norton products (and most AV products) as they install their files in heaps of locations and which aren't immediately identifiable.

Shewolf, I know you haven't had much luck with Symantec support, but HERE is missing instopts.dat solution.

Well it's official I had to completely "dump" my computer and start from scratch as the more instructions I used to uninstall NSW 2005 from my computer the worse the problem became and others started.

I am very good at following directions so I printed all the directions & steps out for everything that I was told do to and followed that and then I got to the point of having the instopts.dat problem. Symantec directed me to the site provided in the post here by Insomniac (thanks :) ) well I followed those directions and that lead to another error (I forget what it said now) and it got to the point that I couldn't do anything at all it was sooooo messed up.

So after dumping my computer I did NOT reinstall NSW I downloaded AVG from the MG download site. I however did have to reinstall the Norton Personal Firewall as I needed a firewall until I can get reccomendations from people on the forum of a good free firewall. One thing is that the firewall CAN'T be Zone Alarm as my hubby does not like it and I am not going to get up at 5am to fix something for him
So what is a good FREE firewall besides Zone Alarm???

I have pretty much decided that I no longer like Symantec/Norton products I mean come on you would think that after I dumped my computer the first time to get rid of the problem that when I went through the liveupdates that the so called "fix update" would be included and taken care of but NOPE it wasn't.. Then following the directions to "fix" the problem just lead to more and more problems and a huge hassle and waste of my time.

Ok I am done venting now :) lol sorry..

Thanks though for all of you that have responded to my plea I greatly appreciate it.

I don't know why he doesn't like ZoneAlarm, however apart from ZA, Agnitum Outpost and Sygate are also very good.

They all make both free and professional versions.

Either that or get another hubby. J/K :)

I sympathize with you as I had lots of problem with Norton Internet Security. I ended up going into the registry with a lot of patience and reviewing Symantec instructions. In the end, I took out the files, reinstalled the product and ended up still keeping it on my system until it expires. If you have any other questions, please let me know. I might be able to assist with the steps.

Thanks everyone I have now removed all Norton Products from my computers and on my Main computer (#1) I am running AVG and Sygate on #2 Computer running AVG and Zone Alarm.

My patience wore thin with Symantec as I printed out and followed each and every step provided to me and it just snowballed and created a new problem with each step I did.

Also, the thing that really gets to me is I dumped my computer so that would make it fresh and when I installed Norton System Works 2005 I did all the updates and scans etc.. My liveupdate showed I was up to date so then Symantec's "fix update" for the Quarantine Problem should have been included but it wasn't. They (Symantec) tell me that the "fix update" is in the LiveUpdates and to run liveupdate to get it. I am like Helllooooooo I just started my computer from a fresh state reinstalled NSW so that "fix update" should have been included. Their response to that was to uninstall NSW and reinstall it and when I run live update it will be included. To me that is going around in circles how can it be included upon reinstalling when it wasn't included when I started with a fresh computer?

Like I said with each solution to fix one problem another problem arose so I finally said to heck with it and am vowing to never use Norton again.

Well thanks again everyone for all your suggestions, time and help..

LOL sometimes I feel like getting a new one lol j/k :):):)

Well as for him not liking ZoneAlarm it seems to block some sites for him I can't recall what sites it would block but they weren't porn sites or anything like that just normal average sites. I think one may have been is GM training site. So he doesn't like ZA at all.

I have installed Sygate and AVG on my computer (Main Computer). So far I like them I do have a question posted in the Spyware forum because I did their Read Me First and for somereason Symantec Security Check came up that I did not have an AntiVirus installed on my computer. I thought AVG was an AntiVirus product? It is up to date so I don't understand why Symantec Security Check was telling me I have no AV on my computer. Since I have AVG on my 2nd computer I am going to go through the Read Me First on Computer #2 and see what that brings up for AV check.

Thanks agian for all your time and help..

I wouldn't worry about Symantec not recognising AVG.

Micro$$oft's Security Center sometimes doesn't recognise some AV products as well.

It's generally fixed with an update in the future, but as long as you know you have it installed and updated then you don't have anything to worry about.
