Are you sure the speakers are in the right output?
Have you checked the Master Volume for anything muted?

Check that Windows Audio Service is started.

    Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services
Scroll down the list of services until you find the Windows Audio service.
Right click on it and choose Properties.
Make sure it is set to Automatic and Start is checked.

Check: Device Manager for bad drivers.

For XP: Go to Start>Control Panel> System. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager, then click the plus sign in front of Sound, Video, Game Controllers.
For Vista: Go to Start>Control Panel>Device Manager
In Device Manager, if there is a ? in front of your audio device, that means no audio driver is installed.
A ! means driver installation attempted but with problems.

Tell me what you see there.

Went to control panel sounds and audio devices to check volume says no audio device, went to device manager and

    Audio Codecs
    Legacy Audio Drivers
    Legacy Video Capture Devices
    Media Control Devices
Multimedia Audio Controller (Has A Yellow ! sign)
    Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device
    Video Codecs

All fine apart from Multimedia Audio Controller, when we right click it says the driver for this device is not installed (code28)

Does anyone know where I can download this Multimedia Audio Controller??

And will this sort the problem out..

    Try these two things:
In Device Manager, right click your audio driver and then "Scan for Hardware Changes"

If that doesn't work, do a complete shutdown. (not restart)
    Then reboot.

Is this a brand computer like HP, Dell, Gateway, etc.?
If it is, could you post the complete model number?

The Audio Controller is actually the Realtek driver I just suggested. It did not install properly for some reason.

If the steps in my last post doesn't fix it, make sure to go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the (all) Realtek audio drivers, then try the reinstall again.

I think I see the problem. I gave you the driver listed for your motherboard.
You have a Gateway and I don't see Realtek drivers listed at their site.
Drivers are sometimes modified by the manufacturers.

I don't seem to be able to find your model there.
Do you have either the CD's that came with your PC or the serial number on your PC?
The CD's should have drivers on them.
You can find your serial number this way:
How do I find my serial number?

I struck out at Gateway completely, but found an eMachines 4260 download for audio at the eMachines UK site.
It is still a Realtek driver but different version. (This is a direct download)
