HEY! I have an old gateway and i play cs alot and it used to never be laggy but now its like old and outdated and...gay. I was wondering if i bought new montherboard and cpu would it work in it? It orrigionally has an AMD cpu and thats what im gonan get if i get a new motherboard. I would just build a new pc but i spend like 700 on my gun and tank...Heres the link to the motherboard and cpu...http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1208266&CatId=0

I would probably have to get a new power supply to power it. like a 450 watt
Then ima get a new graphics card. But, will that all work if i just drop in a new motherboard/cpu???? Thanks!!

Let me get this straight, you have $700 to spend on a new comp?or you just want to upgrade the mobo and cpu?If you wanna upgrade the mobo you will have to check your case is atx look inside and around the mobo for an atx sign or sticker or find out the name of your mobo and check the manufact's site, you may also need new memory and a new psu but if you have $700 you could build a complete new system or for less! The mobo and cpu you linked are outdated you want a 939 socket a64.

Problem is that with it being a gateway case you will find that it may not fit just any board. Many computer builders use designs for their boards and cases that are built specefically for them. It can be very difficult to find a normal ATX board or even a power supply that will fit in there.

Do you have the os installation disk that came with the gateway because if you do it will probably not work if you put in the new motherboard usually on an oem setup the motherboard is the only thing you cannot change to use their install disk. you would probably have too buy a new copy of what ever OS you wanted.

OH also that is probably an mico atx board that came with your gateway unless you can change the standoffs in the case you will have to get a micro atx board.

What makes you think it's a micro?

Most oem boards I have seen are micro because there cheaper but there are exceptions

He said it was a Gateway, so you can't assume it's micro.

Gateway make a lot more ATX desktops than they do micro.

That's true that is why I said probably. I did not want to come off the wrong way.

I had a 98' Gateway and there was no way in H#!! to upgrade it, I scrapped all but HD and Monitor and started from scratch. Built a nice system for $1200, but that was 6 years ago, when things were pretty expensive, I paid $175 for just 1-128MB stick of PC133 RAM, for example. Things are much cheaper now, could build a comperable system for under $500 now. :p
