I have just registered om Major Geeks and I apologise now for my very limited technical knowledge. I will not take offence if replies are framed so an idiot can follow the instructions.

Having done all I thought was necessary to register my free version of Avast downloaded through this site and on Major Geeks recomendation I went to get my e-mailed key. But when I clicked send receive a message popped up which I hope I have successfully attached to this post in a word document.

So I cannot complete the registration process without the e-mail from Avast but this also means that I cannot enter into e-mail correspondence with Avast or anyone else for that matter.

I have tried using the Avast uninstall but when I tried to go to safe mode the up and down arrows would not operate to allow me to select safe mode. I had to end up turning off my computer to escape the screen.

I tried System Restore but even before this problem my computer had previously been telling me over the last year that whatever date I tried to restore to had not been successful.

My computer has Windows XP installed as well as Norton Anti Virus and Win Patrol. I believe I can disable Avast via Win Patrol but not uninstall.

Does anyone know how I get around the error message in the attachement or to re-enable my e-mails or uninstall Avast.

Any help will be much appreciated.

    Regards
    Pat

    Re: removing Avast! Virus Cleaner???

    Hi patfrompenge,

You should start your own thread instead of hijacking a previous thread to answer your questions. You should not try to have 2 AV programs running at once. Make sure Avast is not running by looking in your task bar for a blue ball with an A in the center of it. Right click on it and exit the program.

patfrompenge, as puupywonder58 said Two Av's will conflict massively.
If Avast is actually installed and you see it in the system tray. Right click on the icon and select "Stop On-Access Protection"

You can now got to control panel>> Add/Remove and uninstall Avast.

You can know also run the already linked Avast Uninstall utility.

If you want to remove Norton and go with Avast only let us know.

It's also good to start a new thread instead of pulling up one, close to three years old.
    Cheers :wave

    Re: removing Avast! Virus Cleaner???

    Dear Sikvik & Puppywunder58

Firstly - Apologies for my lack of etiquette in hijacking someone else's thread but I had read the FAQs and could not work out how to start a new thread of my own - is there a start a new thread button?

Secondly, but more importantly - Many thanks for your help - I have now uninstalled Avast and I am receiving e-mails again (including belatedly the Alwil activation e-mail for Avast). What a sense of relief.

Sikvik - thank you for your kind offer to guide me through removing Norton and replacing with Avast but I only paid a 2 year subscription to Norton last month so I would not want to dispose of it at this time as it appears to have served me adequately at my level of use up to now.

However, it was interesting that Avast found 5 instances of adware and allowed me to delete these so I will consider Avast or whatever Major Geeks is recommending the next time my anti virus is up for renewal.

One change I noticed which I assume was as a result of the adware removal was that the background to my interenet UK MSN homepage became blacked out - it has now returned to its sky blue background colour. FYI only.

I would like to show my appreciation for your help by making a small donation to support Major Geeks and wondered whether you could point me to a link on the site.

Note to any scammers reading this post - please do not post any links - I am only interested in donating to this site through any established facility on the Major Geeks web page.

Once again many thanks and all the best for Christmas and the New Year to both of you and Major Geeks organisation.

    Kind regards
    Pat

Hi Pat and welcome to the forum

Som info for you on How To Post A New Thread Requesting Support in case you need to in the future.

As for donations, many thanks for the offer but we dont have that option as we all just donate our time freely to give something back to other users who have PC problems and your thanks is good enough :) you could get yourself a Majorgeeks t-shirt or a mouse mat from here

    Halo

Thanks again - I have saved the links provided to my favourites and will shortly be the owner of a new Major Geeks mouse mat which will be on display at my place of work for all to see and enquire about.

I did think about buying a t-shirt / hoody but decided I would feel a bit of a fraud as I think those looking at the wearer will assume that they have a reasonable knowledge of computers which I do not.

Maybe if there was one with the slogan "Major Geeks liberated my computer" or "Major Geeks defeated my computer nasties" (instead of Nazis) I would have felt more comfortable about buying one.

    Best wishes to you all

    kind regards
    Pat
