I have followed the instructions in "READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide" already. There were several problems that BitDefender and PandaActiveScan were unable to fix, however. I will be attaching logs from CounterSpy, BitDefender, PandaActiveScan, GetRunKey, ShowNew, and HijackThis in this post and the next post in my thread (3 in each). Thanks for your help in advance.

    Download Pocket KillBox
    • Save it to your desktop or a place easy to find.
    • Do not run it yet
Please look in Add/Remove Programs for the following and uninstall them if found:

    poolsv or WinAntiSpyware2007

Now scan with HijackThis and check the boxes for the following entries:
( Make sure ALL browser windows are closed when you click FIX )

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://go.compaq.com/1Q00CDT/0409/bl7.asp
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://go.compaq.com/1Q00CDT/0409/bl8.asp
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://go.compaq.com/1Q00CDT/0409/bl7.asp

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {10FE7009-EBD6-471E-8502-246BFEC0B1BD} - C:\Program Files\microsoft frontpage\hokerow58441.dll

    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Uninstall BitDefender Online Scanner v8 - {85d1f590-48f4-11d9-9669-0800200c9a66} - %windir%\bdoscandel.exe (file missing)

Again, make sure ALL browser windows are closed when you click FIX.

Now, Please boot into Safe Mode, be sure you have the Viewing of Hidden Files & Folders Enabled per the tutorial. Now, navigate to and DELETE the following if they should remain:

C:\Program Files\poolsv Delete this whole folder if it exist!

C:\Program Files\svhost Delete this whole folder if it exist!

C:\Program Files\WinAntiSpyware 2007 Delete this whole folder if it exist!

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\WinAntiSpyware 2007 Delete this whole folder if it exist!

C:\Documents and Settings\Wilson RA\Application Data\WinAntiSpyware 2007 Delete this whole folder if it exist!

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine Delete everything in this folder!

Next, run CCleaner to clean up cookies and temp files.

    Locate PocketKillbox
(Procede with this step even if they do not show in blue)

Next, you will be entering items into Pocket KillBox. Please select the “Delete on Reboot” Option. Copy&Paste each of the file names listed below into the box one by one, making sure Delete on Reboot is Checked for each entry. Click the Red X for each entry, but DO NOT Allow your machine to be rebooted until the last item has been entered:

** Note: For any of the .dll files, check the Unregister .dll Before Deleting box as well. If this option is not enabled, don't worry about it.

    • If you get an error message about Pending Operations, just reboot your computer manually.

After you complete the above, REBOOT and proceed with the rest of this fix...''

Next Reset Web Settings & Default Security Settings

    To Reset Web Settings:
Right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK

    To Default Security Settings:
Right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Security Tab and click Default Level for Internet, Local Intranet, Trusted Sites, and Restricted Sites.

    Note for IE 7 users:
Select Internet Options, then the Advanced Tab and then the Reset button under Reset Internet Explorer Settings.

Finally, I would like you to flush your System Restore points. Please follow the instructions in the below:

    • Disable and Re-enable System Restore

    • Turn OFF System Restore to flush any bad Restore Points.

    • Then, follow the instructions at the bottom of the linked page to Re-enable the Restore Utility which will create a fresh restore point.
After you complete the above reboot once more and then scan with HijackThis and attach the new log.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now.

OK, I followed all of your steps. Sorry, I had missed your first statement about where to download PocketKillBox, I found it

Here is my newest HiJackThis log, let me know if you notice other problems. So far things seem clean. Is it normal for HiJackThis to create a "backups" folder in the C:\program files\HiJackThis folder?

First, uninstall CounterSpy and any other antivirus you installed during the READ ME. If you have previously installed antispyware or antivirus programs installed please disable them before continuing with the next step.

Now, look in Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) for the following running processes and, if you see any of them, try to END them:[/FONT][/B]

    poolsv.exe

Now scan with HijackThis and check the boxes for the following entries:
( Make sure ALL browser windows are closed when you click FIX )

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [poolsv] "C:\WINDOWS\poolsv.exe"

    Next, locate PocketKillbox

Now, Copy and Paste C:\WINDOWS\poolsv.exe into the box – If it exists, it will show up in Blue. Check the option to Delete on Reboot and Click the Red X and Yes to the confirmation message. A message will ask if you want to reboot now – Click YES and allow your PC to reboot.

    • If you get an error message about Pending Operations, just reboot your computer manually.

Once your computer has rebooted, run one last Panda Online Scan and attach the log, also please attach a fresh HJT log.

I uninstalled CounterSpy, BoClean, MS Windows Defender, and A-Squared

I followed all directions regarding poolsv.exe and deleted with KillBox. I ran Panda ActiveScan Online and HiJackThis again. I noticed that there appear to be backups of these deleted files in C:\!Killbox\, but you'll notice that in the activescan log.

Logs for ActiveScan and HiJackThis attached. Thank you!

Almost done, now navigate to and delete the folder "C:\!KillBox\". Next run CCleaner to cleanup any leftover junk files such as cookies, temp files, etc;.

Your HJT log looks good, are you having any current problems?

No current problems that I notice. I guess I'll just re-install Bo-Clean now, since it seems more useful than Windows Defender and I am only to have one realtime blocking tool at a time installed. Anything else I should do? Thanks
