Hi all! My computer's been running very slow recently and I've been trying everything I can to get it back up to speed. I've followed all of the steps in the READ & RUN ME FIRST post. I was able to run all of the scans, the only problem I had was getting my internet working in safe mode so the two online scans were done in normal mode. There were very few problems found in any of the scans I did. I've attached all the log files below. Any help that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

You may have to look elsewhere for whatever your problems are because they do not appear to be malware. You have a bunch of processes running that you don't need to load at startup, but if these have always been running then I'm not sure why it took you until now to say your PC is slow. Please describe exactly what you mean by it is running slow. What operations in particular (bootup, browsing, all operations, shutdown) are slow? What is your reference point? You said recently this changed. What have you installed (software or hadrware ) "recently" that may have impacted things?

You can uninstall CounterSpy now since it is only a trial and will add to slowing things down.

You could also (at your discretion) use HijackThis to fix the below lines which will stop these processes from loading at startup:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dell QuickSet] C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet\quickset.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DVDLauncher] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\DVDLauncher.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DMXLauncher] C:\Program Files\Dell\Media Experience\DMXLauncher.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mmtask] c:\Program Files\MusicMatch\MusicMatch Jukebox\mmtask.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DellSupport] "C:\Program Files\Dell Support\DSAgnt.exe" /startup
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: WRNotifier - WRLogonNTF.dll (file missing)

They are not malware, but they are not really necessary. Windows Messenger may come back. If it does you can use this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove it.

You should also run this ViewpointKiller to make sure all Viewpoint stuff has been removed (I still see it in your uninstall list shown in newfiles.txt).

You can also do the below to get rid of some old software and undate to the new versions:

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
    Mozilla Firefox (1.5.0.9)

Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Then install the current version of FireFox from: Mozilla Firefox

We can run the below scan to look for a rootkit problem, but I don't expect that it will find anything.

    Please download Blacklight Beta
    • Download blbeta.exe and save it to the Desktop.
    • Once saved... double click blbeta.exe to install the program.
    • Click accept agreement and Click scan
This app too may fire off a warning from antivirus. Let the driver load.
      Wait for it to finish.
    • If it displays any items...don't do anything with them yet. Just hit exit (close)
    • It will drop a log on Desktop that starts with fsbl....big number
Please post contents of the BlackLight log.

Thanks a lot for the help.

As far as the speed of my computer, pretty well everything has been slow. Both startup and shutdown are slow (startup takes nearly 5 minutes from the time I start my computer until the point when Windows is fully loaded and I can start running programs). All operations seem to be slow as well, just a few examples are: when listening to music in iTunes and trying to do anything else at the same time the music gets choppy, when I open My Computer or browse through folders there's a fairly significant delay before the list of files/folders appears, opening programs seems to take a lot longer than it should as well.

This all seems to have started about 2 months ago and, as far as I can remember, was more of a sudden change as opposed to an incremental thing (my reference point is prior to this, a few months ago everything seemed to be much quicker - especially the time to start up the computer, that was the first problem I really noticed). I also can't think of anything new I've installed (hardware or software) in this time. The only change that happened around this time was updating my Symantec AntiVirus (I get it free through my University and I updated it to a new version recently) but I can't see this being the problem.

I've attached the BlackLight log and any further assistance or tips of where else to turn to look for problems would be greatly appreciated.

If you had experienced what we have here, you would be laughing at this statement. ;) Norton is a well know notorious resource hog that has had many dozens of people coming here complaining about malware and their problems were Norton. Uninstall it and see if your problems go away. It is worth the test. Note: however that Norton (much like malware) does not always uninstall gracefully and sometime requires malware like removal steps to get rid of completely.

I'm not suggest you remain running without protection. I simply stating that you should see what happens without Norton installed. And then try using other tools we suggest in the below thread instead of Norton.

How to Protect yourself from malware!
