i just cleaned up my computer and added outpost firewall, avast anti virus, and counterspy to keep the woolly boogers out .today i went and got a cable modem, hooked it up and.. nothing. couldn't get online........so i called the hi speed tech support and during the conversation ,she asked if i had anything on. of course, the anti-virus, firewall, and anti-spy were all on. turned them all off and,bam!... instant hi- speed ! yeah. now i gotta figure out what software is keeping me out and how to adjust it. any help on this would be appreciated as i am unprotected at this point. i feel nekkid!

also guys(and girls) my hi-speed provider also has something called cox security suite that has the same things i.e.anti-virus,firewall, anti-spy, pop-up protect, blah, blah, blah. as all the stuff i d'l'd the other day. avast, counterspy, and outpost. which is going to work the best? i don't want to clog up my hd with more junk, and i already paid for counterspy. what to do. i still feel nekkid and now i'm confused too..

Assume their security suite is upstream from you ...so I'd look at your firewall as the probable cause of the non-connect ....re-enable it and see if it bumps you off ....

hey guys- maybe i jumped the gun. now the avast anti-virus, outlook firewall, and counterspy are all on and enabled and i'm still online. is it possible the software programs had to recognize my new hi-speed connection before they would let it in? i'm still too new at all this. any thoughts?

well i'm relieved. i didn't want to have to d'l their cox security suite just to be safe after what i just went thru last week cleaning all the worms, trojans, and other crap out so i could get the hi-speed. i'd just as soon not put it in here. i'm trying to find stuff i can get rid of now because i don't need AOL or anything like it anymore. will be nice not to have to use those things that took up so much of my resources. thanks for the help.

UPDATE- i had to turn off outpost firewall. it dropped out my internet connection and showed that there was a kernel32.dll error... i know i need a firewall so i may have to download the one from my hi speed provider. sure would like to make this one work smoothly.

here i am again. i have to keep rebooting to get the "always on" hi speed to work. got rid of avast anti-virus and outpost firewall and dl'd the security suite available from the hi speed provider. almost every page that loads with ie says done but with errors on page at the bottom. i have spent the better part of two days trying to make my birthday present work correctly. this sux! it is so frustrating to get something that is supposed to be better and it just creates more trouble. i never know when i will lose the ability to load a page and when it happens, all i know is to reboot. lately, it is about every 20 minutes or so. someone please help!
