    Hi,

I had some sort of horrible infection so I gave up and formatted and reinstalled, but I'm still having problems:

My browser keeps redirecting to other sites and my internet is very slow.

I keep getting an error message that says "Generic Host process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Svchost is using the most memory of any program in the Task Manager, and my browser as well as other programs will crash or fail to start and the "Send to Microsoft" error message is either about svchost.exe or shlwapi.dll.

When I log onto Windows, it doesn't give me the choice to log onto any of my user accounts-- I can only log on as Admin.

When I try to log out of Windows, it often hangs and one time I left the room and it stayed on all night stuck logging off. I usually have to turn off the power button to shut it down.

Sometimes my sound gets disabled, and I have to go into services and turn it back on.

I followed all of the instructions in the "READ ME FIRST" thread and the logs are attached. ComboFix would not run at all. Every time I tried, I got an error that said "Installation Failed". MGTools also wouldn't work. When I started it up, it said "Zip error: could not create output file". I went ahead and let it run until it was finished but there was no "MGlogs.zip" file.

I am running Windows XP Service Pack 3, and I have attached the log files of the scans that worked. I would really appreciate help with this-- I'm going crazy! lol

    Thanks.

Important Notice: A new version of SUPERAntiSpyware is available.
    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this log later.

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop

    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some data on it
    • Right click on the screen and select > Select All
    • Press Control+C
    • Open a notepad and press Control+V
    • now please ATTACH that report to this thread

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop

    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor.
    • Allow the application to run and a window will open showing that it is TDSSkiller from Kaspersky
    • Click Start scan
    • It will run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    • You need to rename Combofix.exe to 123.com
    • Rename MGTools.exe to Kestrel.com

If you cannot run them in normal mode then please boot into safe mode to try.

Without seeing those logs I cannot give offer you a complete fix.

Attach the logs from MBRCheck, TDSSKiller and then the logs from combofix and MGTools.

    Hi,

Thanks for your help. I ran all of the scans, although ComboFix and MGTools had to be run in Safe Mode. The logs are attached.

Please go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the following software:

    • Ask Toolbar

Could you please get this: Sys6925.Config Collection.sys into a zipped file and attach it for me in your next post? To do this, see the below:

Please go to start > Run and paste in the following:

    log retrievable @ C:\collect.zip

Please go to Jotti's malware scan

(If more than one file needs scanned they must be done separately and logs posted for each one)
    • Copy the file path in the below Code box:
      Code:
      c:\documents and settings\Vanessa\Application Data\Sys6925.Config Collection.sys
    • At the upload site, click the browse button.
    • Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the file(s) we need scanned and click "submit file"
    • Your file will possibly be entered into a queue which normally takes less than a minute to clear.
    • This will perform a scan across multiple different virus scanning engines.
    • Important: Wait for all of the scanning engines to complete.
    • Once the scan is finished, Copy and then Paste the link in the address bar into your next reply.

Then do the same for the below file and also let me know the results:

    Code:
    c:\windows\Sys3390 SettingsCollection.bin
Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    FileLook::
    c:\documents and settings\Vanessa\Application Data\Sys6925.Config Collection.sys
    c:\windows\Sys3390 SettingsCollection.bin

    DirLook::
    c:\windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Application Data\TMP

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3}]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Run MBRCheck.exe again, I should have told you to run TDSSKiller before MBRCheck in my last set of instructions.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Also attach the collect.zip and let me know the results from Jotti and attach the new log from MBRCheck

    Hi,

I uninstalled the Ask toolbar, but when I tried to do the next step (Run %systemdrive%\MGTools\zip "%systemdrive%\collect.zip" c:\documents and settings\Vanessa\Application Data\Sys6925.Config Collection.sys) it doesn't save "collect.zip" anywhere on my computer. I even booted to safe mode and tried, but it didn't work. Should I continue with the other steps?

    That's looking good now. :)
    • You need to rename 123.com back to Combofix.exe
    • Also rename Kestrel.com back to MGTools.exe

    Run Ccleaner..

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
