Hi everyone! This is my first post here and I am faced with a problem I can not seem to figure out on my own. This has never happened before so I am extremely confused.

Last Wednesday, my computer started running extremely slow. I mean slow to the point where I could boil a pot of water between mouse clicks. This would happen for an unusually long amount of time. Then it would seem to clear and I'd be able to go about my normal business on it. This has been happening intermittently for almost a week now.

I noticed the day before this started that Windows had added some updates, so the first thing I did was uninstall any updates Windows performed. This worked...for a few hours. I then uninstalled any software I had installed in the past week or so. This also worked briefly. I made sure I didn't have any of my anti-virus/spyware programs running in conflict with each other. I uninstalled a couple of them just to be safe. I even threatened the computer with its life and it just kept grinning...

I even checked the memory and hopefully I am reading it right, but it seems like I am only using half...I could be wrong.

This is leading me to believe that it could be a hardware issue? Maybe the hard drive has a problem. Is there any kind of diagnostic test I can run on my system? I would greatly appreciate any input.

OH and I already thought of just wiping the slate clean and starting over, but I'd really like to leave that as an extreme last resort. Besides, if it is hardware, that would probably be pointless to do then.

Oh and I scanned my computer with at least half a dozen different spyware, malware, anti-virus and trojan applications and nothing came up.

I forget to mention that I am running an Acer Aspire 7741 with Windows 7 Home Premium.

I use Avira AntiVir and my machines all do the same during an update if I am using them at the time.

Do you want a list of every program I have installed? Or just the most recent programs?

I have 176 GB of free space.

I had already cleared out any excess programs under msconfig, startup. The only ones that are still checked are: amicosinglun64.exe, 3 system 32 files, Realtek Audio Mananger, some unknown file in the windows folder (plfseti.exe),
synaptecs pointing device driver, power management, IAstoricon, and the java updated.

The Rescue CD failed to load properly three times. It stopped at the VDF copy screen. When I was attempting to reboot the machine, it brought me into Windows Startup Repair mode. So I let that run through and it didn't do much of anything...surprise, surprise. So now I am going to try memtest, which I think I already have downloaded somewhere.

Hmmm.... I am on my desktop computer now. The laptop is running memtest. Is it a good thing to be getting a bunch of failing addresses? =P

Over 600 errors.. that can not be good. I guess I need to get new memory modules. That is fine. I only have 4GB of memory now. With this mobo I can get up to 8GB.

Thanks. I already found the right one. Let's hope it is the memory modules and not the CPU memory. That would not be good.

Thanks for everything! I really appreciate it.
