    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

    I am unable to run the panda active scan i have tryed turning off firewalls etc just keep getting;
An error has occurred downloading Panda ActiveScan. Please repeat the process. If the error occurs again, restart your system and try againPossible causes of this error are:

Not allowing the application's ActiveX control to be downloaded.

    Problems with the Internet connection.

The error could be due to a download error or an installation error due to lack of hard disk space, privileges etc.,...

i presume its the activeX control as this doesnt appear like it does on anything else i have downloaded today
    Thanks

First, you need to rename HijackThis as requsted in the READ ME. You should rename it to "analyze.exe", this is required for newer infections to be visible.
Second, you still need a few more logs, please read carefully.

    • CounterSpy
    • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
    • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
    • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat

After you complete the above instructions, run the below before attaching the logs.

    1. Download this file - combofix.exe
    2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Attach this log to your next reply
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Once you have completed the scan above, attach the following logs and Tim will be with you when time permits.
    • Fresh HJT Log
    • CounterSpy Log
    • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
    • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
    • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
    • ComboFix Log

You are probably having problems uploading the HJT report because you only renamed it.....and it is the same log as you already attached. Re-run it and then save it as HJTLog2 and try attaching it(after doing the below).

Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    Viewpoint Media Player

    What is this:
    C:\Documents and Settings\lee bannister\Desktop\trj662.exe??

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Please copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    * Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:

    * Now click the 'Done' button.
    * Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    * You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt

    Attach new logs for:
    ShowNew
    GetRun
    HJT
    Avenger

    What is this:
    C:\Documents and Settings\lee bannister\Desktop\trj662.exe??

    Above is trojan remover 6.6.2

i never run this as i came across Major Geeks.com
    Lee

p.s Can you please confirm F2 and 04 from the next set of instructions as i cannot see these on the scan i just did with HJT 02 and 08 are availble which ive selected.

ive just noticed the two missing files on the old scan F2 and04 but they are not on the new scan

You may or may not wish to delete that ....it's up to you. You can always reinstall if you find you want to use it in the future.

Some of the items in the fix that I gave you may not exist anymore( as I was going on the HJT log that was before you ran some of the other programs)....so just do what is still there.

Your second HJT log is still showing that it isn't renamed ...plus these two items:
    are still there.

Your avenger log showed that it did not run properly either.

Disable all anti-spyware and anti-virus programs and then do the HJT fix again for those two items and redo the Avenger fix paying careful attention to the instructions.

Let me know if there are any errors or problems.

After doing those, you can re-enable your anti-spyware programs.

Your logs look clean. You may uninstall any programs we had you download (including CounterSpy, etc).

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
    * Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix you can delete the ComboFix.exe file and associated C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    7. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    8. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
    * How to Protect yourself from malware!

Though I really would like to see a proper HJT log where the program is here:
    C:\Program File\HJT\analyse.exe.

That Log does have me baffled a little i have already unistalled everything threw your last post.
However i cant unistall an earlier analyze.exe its a white box with a blue top
when i try to runas all i get is.

    c:\-1\LEEBAN-1\Desktop\analyze.exe
c:\-1\LEEBAN-1\LOCALS-1\Temp\A temporary file needed for initialization could not be created or could not be written to.Make sure that the directory path exists.and the disk space is availble. choose close to terminate the application.

    Close ignore

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

If HJT is still in your add/remove program list ...uninstall it.
Delete what is on your desktop:
    c:\-1\LEEBAN-1\Desktop\analyze.exe

Delete the temp file: (either use CCleaner or ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Then re-download and unzip to C:\Program Files ....and then rename the HiJackthis.exe to analyse.

Yes....deleting the quarantine files was one of the instructions in the Read and Run First sticky.

The btwebcontrol was also quarantined by NOD.....so you should be good.

But I would still like to see a new HJT log.

Ok im guessing im just thick:D ive tryed do do another HJT log and rename it as analyze.exe.so now i have two of these lovely files that i cannot remove.
so i have renamed it HJT log.If this isnt correct this time I REALLY DONT KNOW WHAT I AM DOING WRONG as i am following the instructions.:cry:cry:cryI acn only see one way to rename the file by rightclicking and going down to rename.

when i deleted the quarantine files i deleted them from NOD32 and not from program files:eek:

I have run another scan with NOD 32 and as expected all the files have gone apart from the BT dialer one.
Thanks for your patience and help

Frankly I don't know what you are doing wrong ....if you are right clicking the .exe file and going to rename ...that would/should do it .....but it isn't.

However, you may wish to read this: BTOpenworld which is something I assume you signed up for and installed. That is what Nod32 is reporting because that ISP tracks your usage and "reports" home. Many anti-virus software will pick this up as a threat.

    Hello Tim,
That makes sense as i am using dialup and get so many free hours per month before it changes over to pay per minute.so i shall ignore that on future scans.

HJT log really does have me stumped.......

Would just like to thank you for your time and patients in getting the problem sorted thankyou:drink

You don't need to rename the log! You need to rename the HijackThis.exe file to analyse.exe. This is what was explained in step 7 of the READ ME. Right click on the C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe file and select rename. Then change it to analyse.exe The log file that is created is by default named hijackthis.log and you don't need to rename it. You can just attach the hijackthis.log

    Bingo!! ;)

I have not read thru the whole thread. Do you actually have any remaining issues that Tim was helping you with. I do notice you never completed the instructions he gave you in message # 18.

  33. leebannister927

    leebannister927 Private E-2

only remaining issues is removing the analyze.exe on my desktop and one now in program files in the hijack folder as i completly messed all that up.
they are not causing any issues apart from being there and they cannot be deleted.
if they are not removed NO problems MY fault.

i have HJT to delete then to go threw the link at the bottom to protect myself a little better.
    Thanks

You can run HJT, click on "Open the misc. tools section", scroll down and click on "Uninstall and exit". Once this is done, manually delete the file and if it remains the Program Files directory. (C:\Program Files\HijackThis)

OK im still getting the same error cannot delete analyze:it is being used by another program or person.
i have followed the instructions just given .

This is what i did because i never understood the instructions on the HJT bit. Rather than change the name of the file i downloaded i changed the name of the HJT log text and i renamed them analyse.exe and this is why i have he problem of these files now.
    Thanks

    Hello Tim,
they are in the Hijackthis log in program files C:\Program Files\HijackThis and i cant delete the file in there because i get the same error as below.all other evidence of HJT as gone.

if i right click on the file analyse.exe properties and click the program tab theres a MS DOS logo with this next to it "C:\Program Files\HijackThis\analyze.exe"

then click on advanced i get; windows PIF settings
    custom MS-DOS initialization files

    Autoexec filname:%SystemRoot%\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT
    config filename:%SystemRoot%\SYSTEM32\CONFIG.NT

not sure if this is any use

Is not HiJackThis in your add/remove program files? Is this where you get the message that it is in use?

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    * Click on the magnifying glass icon.

This would indicate what I was suggesting previously ....you have a hardware issue. Possibly a failing hard drive. You will need to slave that hard drive into another computer and then find and save all of your documents and such. Then see if you can't do a full wipe and restore the hard drive.

This is an issue for the hardware/software forum.
