    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

    Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

    READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this aother user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:

    Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    I am not seeing any malware in your logs. Please attach a log from Spybot showing what was found.

    Are you saying that you can not hear your fan running? What happens if you try to boot into normal mode?

    thanks for helping me.. i am removing all my data from my laptop just in case it is not worth saving..
    yes, i can't hear the fan, but i can only operate in safe mode, when i try to go to normal mode, vista opens, but never gets a program to run, then if i try to open anything i get that black screen 'security failure' (failure to load security options)

    i cannot hear the fan in either mode, it is silent

    i attached the spybot report, i chose to include recent removals.

    thanks again! i just want too know if i can save this laptop

    Since I am not seeing any malware, I do think it would be a good idea to make the backups of your files and data and then do a new install. I can't determine if you are having software or hardware problems, but a clean install will help you to figure that out.

    Tim,

    Thanks alot and i backed up all my data, but before I re-install Vista I did one more Spybot scan and it found Virtumonde again (log attached). I fixed the problem in Spybot and robooted, but same result as below, slow start, programs fail, etc etc. no fan noise.

    I am also getting a 'system event notification failure' pop up when i start up in safe mode.

    If I can do anything else without reinstalling Vista, let me know.

    thanks!

    This is an incorrect detection by Spybot. The registry key being shown is for Tiny Personal Firewall which is likely your CA Security Suite is using. The below registry key can be seen in the runkeys.txt log inside of MGlogs.zip
    Code:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\PFW]
    "DllName"="UmxWnp.Dll"
    "Logoff"="WLEventLogoff"
    "Logon"="WLEventLogon"
    "Shutdown"="WLEventShutdown"
    "Startup"="WLEventStartup"

    ok.. so does it seem that i should re-install Vista and see if it clears my software prob? and if not, i am prob stuck with a hardware issue?

    thanks!

    Short answer is yes. Make sure to reformat and then a clean install. Do not use any other media until you have the system up and well protected. Scan any media files that have your backup info. That way you will know if it was a software or a hardware issue. Good luck.

    Can you recommend the best way to format and reinstall? I did the Dell return to factory settings and the PC works in normal mode, but it won't connect to the internet on my wireless network, it logs in but cannot get out to the internet.

    thanks

    Have you first tried getting online with it hardwired? Restoring to factory settings should be adequate.
