    To Whom It May Concern:

PROBLEM: Mozilla Firefox and/or Internet Explorer are HIJACKED. After “Googleing” pretty much anything and clicking on the subsequent link, the user is sent to a completely different website always having to do with “Virus Alerts” of some kind. Little bars start popping up as if the system is being scanned. Many popups occur that are not able to be closed. Absolutely no button will allow the user to escape the browser. The user must go to Task Manager and force quit the process. However, when typing each URL directly into the browser, everything is okay. Note: There is a weird “PersonalAV” folder on Start Menu. This must have something to do with this virus/malware…

I've completed the "READ & RUN ME FIRST: Malware Removal Guide" to the best of my ability, following every detail. I'm helping my sister and she is running Windows XP Professional, 32 bit.

-All but one antivirus program uninstalled
-All but one software firewall uninstalled
-No "Viewpoint" applications in Add/Remove Programs
-All older Sun Java updates removed and only recent one installed
-Emptied all quarantine items from McAfee
    -Emptied recycle bin
    -Do not have Norton
-Downloaded and ran CCleaner, both on main account and Administrator Account (Safe Mode = F8 on boot)
-Enabled viewing of hidden files, system files and file extensions
-Set to "Normal Startup Mode" in msconfig
-Did not have any applications in Add/Remove Programs on the rogue list

-SUPERAntiSpyware.exe = Tried to follow all the directions precisely. Was able to install by changing to SAS.EXE but continually receive following error: "SUPERAntiSpyware Application has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." This error occurs regardless of starting from the Desktop or from All Programs >> SUPERAntiSpyware. NO LOG!

-Malwarebytes Anti-Malware = Tried to follow all the directions precisely. Renamed download from mbam-setup.exe to mb.exe and downloaded directly to the OS root drive. Was able to install and get all the way to “Update Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware” and “Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware” but upon clicking “Finish,” NOTHING HAPPENS. When attempting to open the program from the Desktop or from All Programs, absolutely nothing happens. NO LOG!

-combofix.exe = Tried to follow all the directions precisely. Downloaded directly to the Desktop. Just like Malwarebytes, NOTHING HAPPENS upon double clicking on it from the Desktop. Also tried opening it from Windows Explorer, but nothing. NO LOG!

    -RootRepeal = See attached RRlog.txt

    -MGtools = See attached MGlogs.zip

Thank you very much for your help. Though backed up to an external hard drive, this computer contains thousands of pictures of my niece… I hope this problem doesn’t engulf! :(

    Thanks again,

    Zeke

Please double-click the RootRepeal.exe previously downloaded.

    * Select File then Scan
    * On the Select Drives form select drive [ insert drive infected here ] by "ticking" the box for drive [insert drive here] and click OK
    * When the scan is complete - highlight each of the following file(s) (one at a time if more then one is listed) by left clicking it. Then use right mouse click and select the Wipe File option only for each file.
    F:\WINDOWS\system32\uacinit.dll
    F:\WINDOWS\system32\UACiphxngpnrb.dll
    F:\WINDOWS\system32\UACxjkcdovaev.dat
    F:\WINDOWS\system32\UACyalnkbltof.dll
    f:\windows\temp\sqlite_uzoyfo2f5vdvdhh
    F:\WINDOWS\Temp\UACf8f6.tmp
    F:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\UACexrmltlirs.sys
    F:\Documents and Settings\McKean's\Local Settings\Temp\UACf842.tmp
    * After Wiping all files, immediately reboot your pc!

After reboot, download/install/update and run the scanning tools you couldn't run!

Attach those logs, the new RootRepeal log, and also run the F:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    * F:\MGlogs.zip

Thank you very much, TimW. It looks as if we're on the mend! Now that I was able to actually RUN the applications (thank you), I've attached the appropriate logs. :)

Sweet. That did it!. Your logs are clean.

Run this: Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
