    Hi,
My father just tried to install a new usb external hardive on his pc.After hooking it up and installing the software/drivers for the first time it was working, just at a slower speed due to having a 1.1 usb.So we left the software and drivers installed on the pc and installed an new 2.0 pci card.
After booting up the pc recognized the new hardware and all seemed fine. But after a couple of days the pc slowed down drastically, and eventually would not make it to the welcome screen. So I did a system restore and it took the new software for the external drive off,and the pc booted up again just fine.
So I reinstalled the software again and it did the same thing,it wouldn't boot up.I'm totally lost as to how to resolve this. How do I get this to work without it freezing everthing up?

    External Drive:Model>Maxtor one touch2 200GB 7200 rpm 8mb cache
New usb 2.0 pci card:4 port Dynex highspeed 2.0
Pc:Hp pavilion win xp pro 800mhz processor 256mb ram 30 gb hardrive

    Your help is appreciated,
    Grimmer

Make sure your system meets the requirements for the software.

Thank you both for your input.
I'm pretty sure now after looking further into it,that the problem is the software, because I uninstalled the software for the hardrive and the pc ran fine and the usb 2.0 port was working also.
I'm thinkin now that the pc doesn't meet the system requirments needed to run this software.Once I have acces to the manual I will look and see what is required to run this and i'll post back.

    thanx again,
    Grimmer

The manual says that it requires pentium 3,or500 mhz or higher processor and at least 128 mb of ram. This pc has a intel celeron processor 800mhz and 256 of ram.Not sure why it wouldn't work on this pc.Any thoughts?

Ok, I went into services and found upnp and its set to manual, which I'm assuming means it's turned off since It only gives me the option to start it.
Now I looked at the link you gave me, and it says:

    "APPLIES TO
    • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition SP1
    • Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP1 "'
And Hes running xp pro sp2 on this pc.So unless it also applies to os's running sp2 then I'm gonna leave it alone.
    His Model # is:Hp pavilion xg838
Also noticed when Iwas in services.msc, that all the norton services were running, which is strange because we just uninstalled it thinking that was contributing to the problems.
Not sure where to go from here, I;m not very good at resolving these issues.\
Thanx to all that helped on this matter,
    Grimmer

Disable UPnP completely, do not leave it at Manual. Also go into the Bios and make sure that "USB Legacy Support" in the Advanced Screen is set for Auto. The reason for the Microsoft link was to explain a possibility, due to I have seen it happen with Legacy hardware using XP SP2.

Alright Ib disabled the uPnP service and just finished checking legacy usb suport and it was already set to auto.
Whats next? And As I'm booting the pc back up it again taking a long time to boot up.
