help w/ McAfee

I'm trying to fix a friend's computer and install a different virus detection software. He doesn't have much smarts in the computer area so this is where my problem begins.

He tried to uninstall McAfee by going into programs and manually deleting the software. He didn't know to go into the control panel and selecting Add/Remove Programs to remove the program. Now, I've tried removing the program that way and the computer starts up the uninstall process, but the window that comes up contains only two buttons restart and close and neither do anything. To get rid of the window i have to press Ctrl, Alt, Delete and end the process.

My guess is that my friend deleted some files or applications out of the program while uninstalling manually that were critical for the program to function in any form, regular process or uninstall. So i'm stumped as to how i get rid of the rest of the software from his computer. Anyone with any advise or solutions please reply. Thanks
