Please help me out! Two days ago I was hit with some pretty serious malware, browser hijacks were sending me to some "registry scan" websites and something like dogfleatreatment.com. I've also experienced lots of other problems, like my computer freezing when trying to shut down, not being able to connect to the internet (I seem to have fixed that), some processes not launching, etc.

I'm running 32 bit Windows XP and have gone through the cleaning procedure. I've run MBAM and SAS multiple times. The first time I ran MBAM I thought things were pretty clean, but I was just redirected to some "registry cleaner" site and I need some help! I also get an error message: "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close" after the computer has been on for a while. Please see the attached logs.

More logs attached here...thanks! I could not get RootRepeal to finish a scan, even after waiting 3 hours, so I gave up.

Before we continue I would like for you to use MSConfig to put this machine back into normal start up mode

You need to ensure step 6 of the R&R was followed, disabling disk emulation software:

Download DeFogger by jpshortstuff and save it to your desktop.

    • Double click DeFogger.exe to run the tool.
    • The application window will appear.
    • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
    • Click Yes to continue.
    • A 'Finished!' message will appear.
    • Click OK.
    • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine...click OK.

    IMPORTANT!
If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Important Notice: A new version of SUPERAntiSpyware is available.
    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this log later.

    Java(TM) 6 Update 11 <--- Uninstall this outdated java.

Delete the below files using windows explorer.
    • C:\windows\Ewawepinuk.dat
    • C:\windows\Gfenahetilarej.bin

You ran an outdated version of TDSSKiller, lets try again.

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop

    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor.
    • Allow the application to run and a window will open showing that it is TDSSkiller from Kaspersky
    • Click Start scan
    • It will run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop

    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some data on it
    • Right click on the screen and select > Select All
    • Press Control+C
    • Open a notepad and press Control+V
    • now please ATTACH that report to this thread

Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

Thank you so much for your help! When I started going through your directions, I got a browser hijack that sent me to
http://trk.s3.amazonaws.com/pcspeedmax.html (which I closed immediately). An during the uninstall of my old version of SAS, a program called Whitesmoke Translator (that I've never seen before) opened. I terminated it in Task Manager and immmediately uninstalled it.

Also, at each startup I get a balloon in the Task Tray that says that my AVG antivirus is turned off, but the balloon disappears almost immediately and when I check AVG everything seems to be in order. I'm still getting the Windows error message every so often that I mentioned in my original post.

I still could not get RootRepeal to finish a scan. I ran Defogger.exe with no errors, but RootRepeal starts scanning c:\cmdcons and gets stuck there, even after an hour or so.

When I ran MBRCheck, I could not Right-Click on the black screen, so I typed out everything by hand. I hope I didn't make a mistake:

I did everything else you asked, and uploaded the logs. Thanks again!

TDSSKiller found and dealt with a baddie. Any other outstanding non malware related issues can be worked out in the software forum, such as those errors you are having. I am not seeing any malware in those logs now. If you like you can run TDSSKiller again just to see nothing has reared it's head again but I doubt it has. Do that and let me know. Then I can give you final steps. :)

I had to leave for a while, but I ran another TDSSKiller scan. Here's the log file; I hope that's it.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
