help with burning dvd's

i was burning some avi files to a dvd with nero. but for some reason it takes like 3 to 5 hours to burn the dvd. ive noticed that what takes the most time is encoding. and for burning the dvd it takes just like 20 or 30 minutes. i looked around in forums and i read somewhere that nero is very slow encoding. and that there are better programs that encode faster. i tried it but they are to confusing. does anyone know any program thats fast and easy? im not a computer expert so if theres a program that what all u have to do is drag and drop please tell me.
