I would appreciate help interpreting a ComboFix log that was generated today. A few weeks ago, my system was infected by the FBI extortion malware. I removed it, I thought, successfully. Lately I have noticed a lot of hard dirve activity after logging on. I also noiced that Symantec Endpoint Protection would get turned off randomly when logged in or sometimes when I was logged off.

Then today received a notification that I didn't have permission to access My Documents user folder and I received a "Explore.exe" " The remote procedure call failed and did not execute" error message. I couldn't open any folders or run any programs. I booted into safe mode and ran MBAM and Spybot. Spybot found a tracking cookie but that was it (I have also run ClamWin, Sohphos Virus Removal, SEP full scan and CCleaner with no resolution).

Realizing I may have a serious probelm (I am unable to access my external HD for backups), I booted into safe mode and ran a SFC /scannow and it did not find any corrupted files. I then downloaded and ran ComboFix and have the log file that I need help interpreting to get rid of this demon.

    Any help is appreciated.

Nothing in that log. Please do the Read and Run First instructions and attach the requested logs for further assistance.

    TimW,

Have run ComboFix again and checked the log text file. Also completed all steps per MajorGeeks guidance and ran RougeKiller, Hitman, MBAM, MGTools, and TDSSKiller and have attached all logs.

Please let me know if you need anything else.

BTW: After running ComboFix again, I was unable to access IE/Firefox again.

    Thanks!

Please attach the log from running MGTools.....C:\MGLogs.zip.

ALso, rerun Hitman and have it fix all that it found. Attach the new log also.

    TimW,

Have attached logs per your instructions. The tools that Hitman found were ones that I had in folders before this started happening, so I don't think they are the cause.

    Thanks.

I am not finding any malware in your logs. You also don't have any AV software installed. I think you will need to post in the software forum for additional assistance.

Hmmm, interesting. I am running Symantec Endpoint Protection but have disabled it for the scanning and running tools.

Well, thanks for your help anyway.

Since you are not having any malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. You can uninstall RogueKiller and HitManPro.
    2. Go back to step 4 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link
Malware removal from a National Chain = $149
Malware removal from MajorGeeks = $0
