Hi. Hope someone can help. My computer is running quite slow. I did all the cleanings, and that seems to have sped up somewhat. Still, something lurks beneath.

A couple of clues might be: 1). Find.fast.exe gives out an error message every so often, and 2.) Usually in the middle of an internal 'search' from the start menu, I get a 'Microsoft Windows experiencing a problem and has to close' mini-window.

On a hunch it might be the old IE6 program I'd been using that was the problem, I upgraded to IE7. No change.

Thanks in advance for anyone's help!

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

To fully get a picture of what malwre can be causing your issues and these days you generally get infected by a few, its best to run the below guide and attach all the logs as HJT on its own will not highlight all malware.

As FindFast is part of Office, I dont know which version you have but on Office XP and above you can do a Detect and Repair from the Help menu of any of the office apps, this should fix a broken office.

BUT incase you have malware follow the below..........

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

Forgot to mention: McAfee Periodically warns me of a 'generic pup'. When I tell it to remove, it says it can't. It says its coming from c:/system Volume Information\_restore {593F-298F-B7D6-4A3D-A260-6D7E6E3F587}\RP328\A0216479.exe. I found that file and told the computer to delete it. It worked for about 30 seconds, then it said it couldn't delete the log file because it was in use. Thanks.

    Welcome to MGs!

I'm sure if you read your instructions and help files from McAfee that they tell you that files in the System Restore folder ( System Volume Information is System Restore) cannot be fixed. You must disable system restore and then reenable it which will clear restore points. That is the only way to remove infections saved in System Restore.

This information is also covered in step 8 of the thread Halo asked you to run. You need to complete those instructions if you are still having problems.
