Hi, I have some data files which was originally recovered using a software "Recover My Files". However due to my inexperience, I have saved the recovered files to the same drive from which they were located (should have saved to a different drive).

And now I have a bunch of files which are on the drive but cannot be used.

Is there any way I can recover them? They are pretty important (mainly memorable pictures)

    Please help, thanks!!

Probably not.... since you already recovered them once but saved them back to the drive they were originally on, the original files were probably overwritten as they were being recovered resulting corrupt un-useable files. The installation of the data recovery program probably did some overwriting of its own. A successful data recovery depends on the cohesive integrity of the data being recovered. Once the integrity of the data has been even slightly diminished, the corruption kind of snowballs exponentially until the data is more-or-less just a useless mess of hex. Unless you have some type of intuitive application that can take partially corrupted data, and by looking at the type of data it is, the application can make logical guesses as to what should be in the corrupt parts, and it can actually 'rebuild' the data to a certain extent by using algorithms and some really hi-end programming.... so, if you have a program like that, try it. If you don't, I don't think there's a whole lot you can do. Programs that rebuild corrupt data are VERY expensive if you can even locate one for public sale. They are usually aimed at forensic data recovery for the authorities or Wall Street or banks and similar institutions.

Then again, I could be totally wrong.

I was talking to this guy on a forum who knows about this sort of thing, and he said it's possible but have to charge me for his service. The cost is quite expensive and I just wanted to know if there is any cheaper way to do it. I dont want to go broke just for saving my data :cry

If you want to spend money, don't give it to some guy on a forum; buy some recovery software that lets you test first to see if the files can be recovered. There are some programs that show you what is found and can be recovered but won't recover until you purchase the program - that is the safe way to go. Look over the file recovery programs listed at MajorGeeks

then google to see which programs might be the best to try.

I tried a few recovery programs. The thing is since the files are there (just that they are not working), the recovery software usually does not know what to recover.

    That's the problem... :(

    Hi cainester,

There are so many data recover program and each of them has its own theory, so you may try more. It is indeed intractable when the original files have been overwritten.
In this situation, normal method cannot help you. The program depends on analyzing the information of partition table cannot help you. You need to process a RAW recovery. A friend of mine has tried all methods but failed, but he recovered many by the RAW method of Data Recovery Wizard.
