a friend of mine has a problem with his modem.

I'm trying to diagnose his problem without accessing the computer.

    Heres the story...
He has a IBM Aptiva(i think tahts right) 98 1st edition.
He has a 56k modem that worked fine UNTIL lighting struck the line and fried it.

He then replaced the modem and it worked fine.

He got a virus and had to wipe the drive clean.

Reinstalled the software - windows that came witht he IBM.

Now the modem will not work.
He purchased a new modem and it wont detect it.

    Here's my ideas
    -Driver conflict with old modem
-PCI slot bad - Only has one
    -Bios setting
-the new modem might not work with the old windows version 1
    somthing related to these problems?
    comments are more than welcomed

reset the bios to factory defaults, usually f6.

if that don't werk, the board may have ironically failed in a small way so it don't work.
