Help with format please

Hi

Ok, this is gonna make me out to be a huge noob but anyway ...

Unfortunately I couldn't get any help with my virus/spyware problem, so I reckon a complete format an re-install of XP is my best option. The only problem with that is .... I don't know how to format a hard drive (gulp). I could probably Google the info but I'm so damn paranoid so I was hoping that some kindly MajorGeeks techie would help me out by giving me a step by step that I could print out.

I would hugely appreciate any help in this

Windows xp setup will reformat ur hard drive or partion. The xp setup will give the option format the drive.

Firstly ... thanx for the help ! Secondly though, what is Fdisk and how do I use it . I want to completely erase my HDD first before re-installing.

FDISK is a utility for partitioning hard drives, for example you could have one physical hard drive with a number of different partitons, (treated as separate logical drives).


Unless you have more than one partion, which anyway we can address later, it is not an issue you need to deal with at this stage.

1. Ensure machine is set in BIOS to boot from CD before IDE0

2. Place CD in Drive

3. Restart

4. Machine will boot from CD, detect hard drive and ask if you want format, choose to format as NTFS. This will completely erase your HD.

5. Follow install procedure.

6. Update after install.

Any problems just repost.
