I have an acer laptop and have had it for abo]ut a year now. Recently my keyboard started messing up. When I press enter it adds a y to what I'm typing, when I am spelling words with a o]u it adds that little bracket yo]u see, sometimes when I press y or m it will enter. Any suggestions? It is really annoying. There hasn't been anything spilled on it, and I've not installed anything new except for the regular windows updates. Any help wo]uld be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Attach a USB keyboard and post if the same thing happens when you type. This is to isolate if you have a hardware or a software problem.

Notes for me: the decimal code for o is 111 and the decimal code for [ is 91.
When you turn on num lock, hold down the alt key and type 111, o will appear on the screen. Likewise, when you turn on num lock, hold down the alt key and type 91, a left bracket appears.
    y is 121, still searching for <enter>.
Enter or carriage return needs 0013. If you use just 13, you get ♪ instead!

ok I will see if I can get another keyboard and try that. Not sure if it makes any difference or not but I have noticed that if I press o]u fast like when I'm typing it will do it but if I press them slow o then u (ou) it doesn't do it. I will post when I try the new keyboard.

"About"? Go check your receipt and if really "almost" a year, contact Acer support and get on record (a timestamp) about this problem. So if a repair seems necessary, you will have proof you reported it in time.

If it has been more than a year, you are probably out of luck. Still I would check your warranty information anyway. Did you buy an extended warranty? Use a credit card? Many double warranties.

If it were just a keyboard, I would say turn it upside down and knock it against the desk a couple times. There may be cookie or chip crumb, or a nice collection of hair and dander or mini dust bunnies hiding out. This again is something a second keyboard can answer. Or a blast from a can of compressed dusting gas might help.

    You say recently, how recent?

I see where plodr is going with his ASCII codes. He's working on bypassing the keyboard buffer in case you can't find an extra keyboard to help further isolate the problem. Pretty clever, dude! :dood

    That got me thinking.

What version of Windows? If Windows 7 or Vista, check out On-Screen Keyboard and see if you get the same behavior (for XP, see XP On-Screen Keyboard).

plodr is NOT a dude! (I changed my avatar so maybe people would stop calling me dude)
    I'm a female senior citizen. ;)

ok I had to go walmart and get one, but I got one and it works fine as far as I can tell. I checked to see when I got it and next month will be a year. Thanks for pointing that out I didn't even realize that I should still have a warranty on it. :)

ok I tried the on-screen keyboard and it doesn't seem to do it either. I am running windows 7, and by recently I mean it's been doing it for about a week to a week and a half.

That tells us it is not a windows problem because the external and onscreen keyboards don't seem to have a problem when working in Win 7.

Did you do what Digerati suggested and clean the keyboard? I usually turn my laptops/netbooks on a side partly opened and spray canned air into the keyboard.

Sorry about gender mix up. I feel bad because I think I knew that too. But no sympathy for the senior citizen comment for I am up there too.

Still, it was clever - even for a girl! :-D

ok yesterday before I read the posts the y and m quit acting up and it is just y and m now but the enter still enters but it adds a y to what I'm typing, but now it is doing it sometimes before enter and sometimes after enter. Not sure if I just made any sense or not. :confused Anyway I tried blowing the keyboard out and it didn't help.
