When I first start it up, it went to a screen that said account wizard. I typed in my email, but then it said is your incoming server a pop or an imap. I don't know which one! It also says type your incoming and outgoing server name, but I don't know what's that either! Please help!

You need to get the mail server settings from your ISP for their mail server.
    or if webmail like Yahoo
    pop.mail.yahoo.com, smtp.mail.yahoo.com

pop is incoming on port 110, smtp is outgoing on port 25.

    Bad out.

how do i no to use pop or smtp? and still, i dont no my incoming and outgoing server name

Who is your mail account with?
You need both pop and smtp to work together.
The exact names depend on who your mail account is with.

Just to try to clarify a little,
If your email address was xblade@yahoo.com
then the settings I gave above are exactly what you want
and you would answer the first question you asked
"is your incoming server a pop or an imap?" pop

But depending on what company your email address is with it may be imap.
You need to go to their website and look for the email client settings.

And another question is, what was your previous email program? Outlook express?

I use T-Bird myself. Since before version 1.

Anyway. Something you could do is, within TB, select Tools, then Import. Within here, you may be lucky to import your addresses, mail, and settings from a previous program. This is what I'd recommend.

If this fails, I'd use your previous email program to find out your Pop (receive email) and SMTP (send email) addresses. :)

i did everything now, but when i type my password in it says,
"response from pop.mail.yahoo.com:error logging in. please visit mail.yahoo.com"
    what should i do now?

For your user name you used just the first part of your email address
before the @ symbol and typed the password correctly?

The account name in Tbird can be whatever you like but the username for login on mail server
has to be exactly first part of email address.

  9. XBladeX510

i did everything and it still doesnt work!

Have you allowed Tbird internet access on firewall?
And not changed any security settings in Tbird yet.
On account settings, server settings page in Tbird you checked for
user name as in my post just above.

If you have the right user name and password it should work.

Sorry I didn't realize what company you were with.
These are all the possible settings depending on your provider.

    Your Email Address: MemberID@...
    Incoming (POP) Outgoing (SMTP)

    ameritech.net pop.ameritech.yahoo.com smtp.ameritech.yahoo.com
    flash.net pop.flash.yahoo.com smtp.flash.yahoo.com
    nvbell.net pop.nvbell.yahoo.com smtp.nvbell.yahoo.com
    pacbell.net pop.pacbell.yahoo.com smtp.pacbell.yahoo.com
    prodigy.net pop.prodigy.yahoo.com smtp.prodigy.yahoo.com
    sbcglobal.net pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com
    snet.net pop.snet.yahoo.com smtp.snet.yahoo.com
    swbell.net pop.swbell.yahoo.com smtp.swbell.yahoo.com
    wans.net pop.wans.yahoo.com smtp.wans.yahoo.com

Pending on your email address, as in blahblah@something.com

the info after the @ symbol is what you want to follow after the following:

  21. XBladeX510

    XBladeX510 Private E-2

great now it only has one more problem! instead of saying error logging in, now it says invalid user/password! im sure i got it right.......

  22. theefool

    theefool Geekified

I.E. If your username is blah@sbcglobal.net

Then your POP server is pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com
    SMTP = smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com

BTW (by the way), did you try an import via the tools option within thunderbird?

  23. theefool

So you changed the server settings from what I originally said to the
    pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com and smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com

  29. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

This is from the sbc help page.

    http://promo.sbcglobal.net/sbcyahoodsl/faq.html#email

How is my experience different if I do not merge my Yahoo! ID?

    A. If you don't merge your Yahoo! ID, you will have to maintain two separate email accounts - yourname@yahoo.com and yourname@sbcglobal.net.

So your server settings would be either like my post from time 21:00
    or pop.sbcglobal.net and smtp.sbcglobal.net

From the look of your email address i would guess the latter.
They sure make things interesting when they start merging services don't they.

  30. XBladeX510

    XBladeX510 Private E-2

    yea i did this

  31. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

Then it has to be these ones
    pop.sbcglobal.net and smtp.sbcglobal.net

  32. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

    sorry double post

  33. XBladeX510

    XBladeX510 Private E-2

ok check if this is correct:
    1.tools,account settings,server settings,server name: pop.sbcglobal.net, user name:xxbladexx
    2.tools,account settings,outgoing server,edit,server name:stmp.sbcglobal.net, Username:xxbladexx510@sbcglobal.net
    Is this correct?

  34. XBladeX510

    XBladeX510 Private E-2

  35. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

    smtp not stmp
    username xxbladexx510

    should work

  36. XBladeX510

    XBladeX510 Private E-2

yea i did that how do i no if it worked or not?

  37. XBladeX510

    XBladeX510 Private E-2

now it says 306 invalid user/password but it is right

  38. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

If you open Tbird and check mail does it give you an error?
better yet send yourself an email and then give it a minute and check.
if you get the mail we are all good... finally.

    let me know.

  39. XBladeX510

    XBladeX510 Private E-2

it didnt send! but i have a thought. In tb, in server settings and outgoing server you hav to put a username. Which one should i put a @sbcglobal.net and which one shouldn't?

  40. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

If xxbladexx510@sbcglobal.net is your real email then xxbladexx510
    should be your username.

your password should be what it always was.

If you have double checked these and it doesn't work.
the only thing that could be different would be if they want the whole email
    address for a user name.

  41. XBladeX510

    XBladeX510 Private E-2

    *sigh* still doesnt work

  42. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

The same user name for both servers.

The server names are the pop.sbcglobal.net
    and the smtp.sbcglobal.net

    neither one has the @sbcglobal.net

  43. XBladeX510

    XBladeX510 Private E-2

    no...............so now what

  44. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

Can you PM me screenshots of your server settings?

    or last possible way
put your whole email address in user name for both servers.
