Please help. I am a novice.
Last week when I looked at my file folders, I could select a Jpeg and it would open up as normal.
I then loaded Ulead Photoimpact5SE, the Jpegs started opening in Photoimpact's programme which was not very good so I uninstalled it.
Now when I select Jpegs in my files, they preview in a small box on the left but do not open, can you help?

I run Windows 98, I know nothing else about my computer

What use to show up when you opened a .jpeg?

"As usual" probably means the default Windows viewer.

Right click on the jpeg file>properties>(open with) change button
Find and select Windows Picture and Fax Viewer (might be named something else).
Make sure "Always use selected program to open this file" is checked.

Probably have to do it for all the different picture formats. I'm sure there's an easier way to restore default settings but I've forgotten.

-edit: ugh, directions were for WinXP... you're on win98... my mistake.

    Hello
Why not download IRFAN and its plugins. It's free and probably available to download here and MG. After you install the program and plugins you can open the options and select the jpg files to open when you click on them in Explorer. Irfan is fast, and brilliant and as a new computer person makes life a lot more easier when handling graphics files and also allows some minor editing to be done.
    Hope this helps

    I agree with Robert.http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Just to encourge you, Ifranview is an excellent little program and easy to use.

The fool, What used to open was another window with the picture in, you could zoom in and zoom out with the mouse wheel, and do basic edits like picture quality etc, I assumed it was a windows programme.

Others; I will try your recommendations and report back.

    many thanks

Right guys, have installed Irfan and that works fine, very similar to what was there before, however when I used to browse in My Computer, I could open the Jpegs from there, now and since ULEAD, I have to launch Irfan first before opening Jpegs, do you see what I mean?

From My Computer I could open word documents or Jpegs no problem, now there is another stage i.e. launching Irfan first

I see your problem and its a easy fix.

Go to any file that you wish to open with Irfan. Right click on it and go down to "Open With" then click "Choose Program..."

A list of program appear and you should be able to select Irfan from this list. Make sure to click "ALways use this program to open these files" then click ok.

From now on those files will be opened and you will not have to open Irfan first.

    *edit:

A quick way to do this for all picture files is to open Irfan Go to Options->Properties and click on the Extentions tab.
Here you can choose the types of files that you wish to open with Irfan. The easiest thing to do is to click Images Only on the right and click ok.

This should make all picture files open with Irfan

First locate a jpeg file, then follow these steps:

Hold down shift and right click the file. The select Open with.

An "Open With" dialog box will appear, pick irfan view, then make sure to check the box next to "Always use this program to open this type of file". Click ol.

The above is the easiest way to get this accomplished.

Did you actually read my post above? What you said is the same as mine.

    Nope, sure didn't! ;)

Why? Cause I was in the middle of posting an answer, then I had to run and do something else, then came back, typed in the rest and pressed "submit reply".

I tend to ignore these types of things. It has happened to me quite frequently in the past. Where I'd answer, and 2 or more people will post near identical information.
