the day before yesterday i booted up my computer to have a trojan pop its nasty little head up, i did a virus scan but it detected it but didnt get rid of it as it kept popping its head up everytime i rebooted and logged on. I think i have that problem fixed because i downloaded "Trojan Hunter" from your site...it seems to be gone now.
    Now...

befoer i had this problem fixed i thought i had it fixed and i was going through my mail and while i was browsing my mail my computer froze. So i thought nothing of it and did a reboot, tried to open my mail and it wont open...i do a ctrl/alt/del and msmin keeps "not responding" So i cant open my mail at all.

please can someone out there help me

oh by the way i have already downloaded all the scans things and i scanned my computer with these...these did not find the trojan the other trojan program did...

    pleeeeeeeeeeease help me

    Hi Ozziewoman,

I am not sure what kind of a damage was done but I will try to help, others may fill in as well.

At what point does the OExpress freeze? Can you open it at all, even for a few secs?

Does it give you any error message, or messages?

You might want to uninstall OExpress from the Add-Remove Programs list but it might appear only as a patch or upgrade. You migh have to go in the 'Add-Remove Windows Components' section.
    Either way let us know.

    thanks for answering

when i click on the icon the outlook express blue window opens but outlook express doesnt open, there are no errors it just doesnt go past the blue outlook window, so i click on crtl/alt/del and the msimn prog is "not responding" i will have a look at uninstalling it, but i really cant loose what is in there..........i cant loose the emails

The problem could very well be a corrupt IE Identity (profile) as well.
But you could simply open up Windows Explorer and browse to this location:
\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\ within the 'Identities' folder you will see your Outlook Express Identity folder (random alpha numeric folder name), within that folder 2 additional folders exists: \Microsoft\Outlook Express within the Outlook Express folder you will see the .dbx files which are actually your OE e-mail folder. You could copy them to a safe location (may be perhaps zip them up?) For backing up OE address and folder you could also use OutlookExpress Backup Wizard program (30-day trial version is fully funtional) or some other program you can find.

Backup your data if you value it before you do anything, ok?

Also (for manual backups) the Outlook Address Book is located at:
    \Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\username.wab

This is the link for OutlookExpress Backup Wizard if you are interested.
We will follow up on the issue once you backup your data. ;)

WOW this is the forst time since i last posted that i could actually get on here, i can open my mail , dont know what happened but it just opened and i have had no problems with it since.

    BUT...

when i thought i got rid of the trojan i didnt. Now when i boot up my machine i get 2 blue screen errors, (if you need to know what it says i will tell you but i am to scared to reboot unless i have to because it might be another 2 days befoer it boots up so i can use it) and then the computer freezes up then its a ctrl/alt/del to try again

i have used 3 trojan programs so far to get rid of this bluddy bug and now its playing up holy harry with my machine........ argh!!!!!!

    help again.....LOL

oh and if i boot up with my cable modem on my nortons has a hissy fit and instead of coming up as normal it goes to like a dos screen and there are 2 trojans, i have scanned both the folders that it says these 2 trojans are in over and over again but it says there is nothing

I see....even though I am happy your Outlook issue is resolved, I am equally sorry to hear about the resurfaced Trojan infection.
At this point this thread became 'Spyware Specific' so I will inform the experts in that field and have them move the thread and also reply to your post, ok?
    Hang in there. ;)

    Hi ozziewoman,

Did you run through our Cleanup Tutorial? If not, you probably should start there as it will remove a lot of baddies.

READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan and Virus Removal

Please let us know the steps that you are able to complete and the ones that give you problems. Note that you need to be in Safe Mode with System Restore OFF (if you have it) and have the Viewing of Hidden Files ENABLED as per the instructions in the link. Make sure to do the Online Scans.

Post back and let us know how you fared. Also, send us a HijackThis Log. Please be sure to follow the instructions below:

Note that your HijackThis should be up-to-date (v1.99) and MUST be extracted to its own safe folder – C:\Program Files\HijackThis!
Should you need a Fresh Download of HJT, get it HERE: HijackThis v1.99

Also note that, before you scan, you MUST close all running programs including your web browser, e-mail and items in the system tray.

Please save your HJT Log as a .txt File and attach it via the "Manage Attachments" tool in the Additional Options section when you post.

    Best luck :)

ALSO: Do you have the most recent Cumulative Update for Outlook Express from Windows Updates? (KB887797)

i run windows ME.... in my shutdown window there is no option to start in msdos mode...i put in my start up disk and start in msdos mode but then it wont acknowledge the command format....

That may be a bit hasty. Why not submit a HijackThis log as per my previous post and we'll see how bad things really are? Beats reformatting every month! :)

You are quite welcome though I didn't do much. And I high-lited your words which I wanted to comment on: PREVENTION is the key, not disinfection.
Would you rather get the flu shot and take vitamin supplements to minimize the chances of getting the flu or keep on partying as usual and then get the flu, get miserable, experience pain, miss work take theraflu and try to recover which might take days even with medication? ;) Or you are probably thinking 'nah I got to my doctor, get the anti-biotic shots and be done with it quickly (re-format)!" ? :p
Either way, none of us will ignore you unless you come back with more spyware infection! lol...

    O.K

everything is downloaded, but i'm not sure about the firewall program, it keeps popping a window up but i dont know what the file is so i just click no, the file is WIN32 Kernel Core Componant.A little assistance would be lovely

i have never used a firewall program before

    please

    thanks

May be I missed it but which firewall program are you using? When exactly do you get that pop-up message?

PS. I will be traveling today so if I don't reply back I am sure PP or one of the regulars would jump in.

    Hi ozziewoman,

Which firewall do you have and are you getting this message on startup.

Also, look in the Windows System Folder and see if you have a file named Kernel32.pif.

    Let us know.

One other thing to check that may speed things up for you.

At the taskbar, click Start|Run. Type Regedit and press Return. The registry editor opens.

Locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE entry, expand it and look for this:

    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\
    Win32 Kernel core component

Don't do anything yet, just back out of the registry editor and let us know if you found it or not.

I downloaded the Sygate Personal Free Firewall...the opoup comes just after i boot up or reboot and at intervalls while on the net, cant tell ya exactly, i'll take notice.

    Nope no Kernel32.pif file there

Nope, in RUN was the folder OPTIONAL COMPONENTS, there wasnt Win32 Kernel core component

i have downloaded the lastest updates from microsoft and i have downloaded the free AVG **which i am also having a bit of trouble with, i have 4 email accounts and its only protecting one of them, not all of them, i have read through the help and nothing to help in there** plus i already had the other clean up programs ....

and when a page is refreshed it comes up as well, but it says the kernell file is blocked

OK. I think you are alright since you didn't have those listed. You may have to setup your firewall at first, a good rule of thumb is do not allow access to something you do not recognize. You should have the option to block something "this time or everytime" if you block something and don't experience any problems go ahead and block it Permanently.

Have a look at the link below, it will help with your win32 kernel core component pop-up.
