Help with resizing windows

This is seriously frustrating me, I can never resize a window and keep it that way - over 50 tries resizing and closing and the window always goes back to default.

When I finally do get it and set the it to view as tiles, a few hours later, it goes back to normal and everything is shown as detail.

Over and over its really pissing me off, it's Vista btw.

I hope someone can help me with this.
