I am virus-free but am still missing two reg files. One is rundll.exe and the other is rstrui.exe so I can try to restore to a time previous to my infection. Anyone have a copy of either or a location where I can get them? Tnx in advance.
    ADDENDUM:
I see from searching related threads that this rundll.exe is not part of the OS in XP. So, my approach is to restore the system to a date previous to my infection. I did a deep search of my system for rstrui.exe but it is not where it is supposed to be and nowhere else to be found. When I run system restore, it gets almost to the end of the process where it stops and says this file is missing. Tnx.

As far as I know rstrui.exe is the command that starts system restore. If system restore starts at all it would seem it would have to exist. It would be in C:\Windows\System32. Rundll32.exe is also in that folder. Take another look in that folder for the two files.

Explain again the error you get when running System Restore and give the full message (including what is in the title bar of the error window and the main body of the window).

Hey thanks sach2 for responding. I will have to try running it again to get the exact message but for now I will say that it is just about three or four words long and simply states that rstrui.exe is missing.

I already did a search in system32 and rundll.exe and rstrui.exe are both absent. I cannot open any files or open any programs. it always says that there is no program associated with the file and to go to the control panel and make the correction but I cannot open any programs in the control panel. I will try attempt system restore and then post the exact message for you in a little while but I have to step out for a bit. Thanks for the help.

Well, now it won't even run system restore! ha ha....Gonna go back into the system32 folder and check again. Will check back here later today. Thanks.

It sounds like you may have a virus problem that hides some of your files. That in combination with the lost file association seems to point to malware.

I would go ahead and go here and download the EXE file association fix. Then unzip it and go inside the folder and right-click the file and select Merge from the list. You will say OK to merge the info into the registry when warned. That should get your programs running.

Then you can check if rstrui.exe will run. If it is still missing then it may be a malware problem that the malware forum could better address. (There is something going around where it hides many files but it usually includes hiding many of the start menu items. Since you didn't mention problems with the Start Menu I would see if the file association fix remedies your problems before going to Malware forum and running the Read Me and Run Me First instructions.)

I have no problems with the start menu that I have seen. I did run avast and also malwarebytes and quarantined everything before posting here.

Thanks for that link and I hope I am wrong but I have the feeling that I won't be able to access the file once downloaded. I will let you know tomorrow. Thanks very much.

For XP, rstrui.exe should be in the directory C:\Windows\System32\Restore
It's quite likely that if this file is missing, then the malware will have deleted all the restore point data.

Yes. You are right. That file was missing from the folder. I checked yesterday but now everything seems fine. Thanks for responding.
