    Hi,

My PC recently became infected with a Trojan. I am running Windows XP with SP2. I am also running Symantec AV and PC Tools Firewall (Free Edition).

Symantec detected the virus and apparently quarantined it, however I continue to have problems. Ocassionially, I keep getting "email alerts" as my PC tries to email out. PC Tools blocks it and advises that "Servises" is trying to access the internet.

I have followed all instructions in the "Read and Run Me First". All scans were completed successfully, however I had to abort the rootrepeal scan after 2 days when it was still going.

This is the first email of two, with attachments.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

It looks like the cleaning procedure took care of your problems. Your logs are clean. Are you actually still having problems?

You do need to uninstall the below old Sun Java version and update to the current version as requested in step 3 of the READ & RUN ME:

    Java(TM) 6 Update 14

Also you should delete the below temp files.
    Code:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\Sprunt\Local Settings\temp\"
    0fc62.tmp 1 Nov 2009 0 "0fc62.tmp"
    6xk2b.tmp 1 Nov 2009 0 "6xk2B.tmp"
    89f2f.tmp 1 Nov 2009 0 "89f2F.tmp"
    rvn26.tmp 1 Nov 2009 0 "rvn26.tmp"

    Thanks for the response chaslang,

Since I posted the original message, my regular virus scan has detected a trojan in the system restore file. I did not update this thread to ensure I did not breach your "anto-bump policy". Should I just toggle the system restore on and off as instructed?

I have not been using my PC much, pending resolution of this trojan issue, but I have not detected any other problems.

I would also greatly appreciate your advice on the following. I have several portable external hard drives that may also be infected. What process should I follow to clean them? They were not attached when I did the previous scans.

    Thanks again.

Just complete the below final instructions which cover this.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
Just scan them with your antivirus and with SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes (one at a time) and cleanup any problems found.
