Help with upgrades

I am upgrading a family computer which currently has:

Current

ASUS P5P800 LGA 775
Intel P4 3Ghz (1MB L2, LGA775)
Corsair XMS 1024MB TWINX-3200 (400Mhz) DDR RAM CAS2

There is no way I'll be able to perform a worthwhile upgrade on my current motherboard. I have looked around and seen things I liked but I am not sure about compatibility.

This is what I've been thinking about:

Future

Gigabyte GA-EG31M-S2
Intel BX80570E8500 (Core 2 Duo E8500, 3.16Ghz)
Corsair Micro TWIN2X4096-6400C5

In reality, I do not really care what parts I have. I want 4GB DDR2 and the Intel Core 2 Duo E8500. It is just a matter of the motherboard. I hope that you can suggest some mobos that are well-known for this price level.

Furthermore, will I need a new PSU or anything because of the new Mobo and CPU in terms of compatibility?

Also, if I buy a mobo now that is compatible with the E8500, will it be incompatible with the new Core i7 because of the difference in nm tech?

Just buy new PC, or if not then motherboard.

And the duo core and quad use socket T LGA 775 so the i7 CPU won't work on a mobo which is compatible with core 2 duo and core 2 quad

because of the fact it uses Socket B (LGA 1366) so you would need another mobo

Does anyone have any suggestions for motherboards or can confirm my projected setup is compatible and decent?
