    Hello,

I am having a bit of trouble removing some malware (I believe Virtumonde is the culprit). I have been through your helpful Read & Run Me First thread several times in both Normal mode and Safe mode. Each time, it appeared that the IE popups had stopped occurring, but after a day or so, they would begin again.

Below is the process I have performed with the results of each action. I hope it is helpful. One thing to note is that I did not attach the AVG Antispyware log (or report) because no report was generated after I ran the scan.

Oh, and I believe I picked up this malware in late October. I installed the Windows east asian fonts so I could type Korean characters. I was trying to find an online Korean dictionary, and I suppose I click something I shouldn't have. Anyway, IE windows starting opening (I don't even use IE) with, I believe, ads about spyware removal software.

Here are the results of the Normal boot mode procedure I followed. If you are interested in the Safe mode procedure and logs, just let me know and I will post them too.

    1. House Cleaning & Setup
    - Uninstall Malware via Add/Remove Programs: Nothing to remove
    - Use MSconfig to setup for Normal Startup Mode: Done, then rebooted
    - Empty ALL Quarantine type folders for antivirus and antispyware applications: Done
    - Empty your Recycle Bin: Done
    - Empty Norton Nprotect folder: N/A
    - Download and install CCleaner: Installed and executed in Safe Mode on all accounts (Admin and 2 others)

    2. Enable viewing of hidden files, system files and file extensions: Booted back into normal mode and set hidden files to viewable

    3. Procedures based on your Windows Operating System (Windows XP)
    - Downloading Tools: Done
    - Running ComboFix: Done
    - Running SpyBot: Updated, immunized, scanned, and fixed. Found and fixed the following:

    Virtumonde.ddc
    Virtumonde.generic

    - Running AVG Anti-Spyware: Updated, configured settings, scanned, applied all actions.
    Found and fixed the following:

    TrackingCookie.Tribalfusion
    Not-A-Virus.Adware.Virtumonde
    Not-A-Virus.Adware.Agent

When I clicked the Reports tab, there was no report. "No reports available" was displayed in the main right section.
    - Using MGtools: Done

I also ran VundoFix as described in Virtumonde aka Trojan Vundo Removal: No infected files were found.

Thank you for your help and for your great site.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Is your copy of CounterSpy a paid version or the free trial that we used to use in old versions of the READ ME? If free, uninstall it now.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    Java 2 SDK, SE v1.4.2_04
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.2 <-- this is almost 4 years out of date.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell4me.com/myway

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

If you need the Sun Java Development kit you can get it here: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

If Spybot still detects anything, attach a log from Spybot. Spybot often reports registry keys that for some reason it cannot delete.

Wow! Thanks for the fast response.

I performed each of the steps you listed with no trouble. I ran SpyBot and it found no threats. Before I posted the thread, one of the symptoms I was seeing that indicated to me that I was still infected was a slow response during the boot while loading my account. When I rebooted after following your steps, my account loaded very quickly. And I haven't seen any IE popups yet.

From what I have seen before when my computer was infected, the malware would respawn itself a few days after I thought I had cleaned it up. If this should happen again in a few days, should I respond to this thread or create a new one? Hopefully, this will be a moot question.

Thank you again for your help!

If it happens in only a few days, just post in this thread with a new MGlogs.zip file. If it happens afer a week or more, run all of the READ & RUN ME and attach all the logs in a new thread.

    Your logs are clean now.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, C:\combofix.txt and C:\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt logs that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
