    Hi everyone,

I have just been given a laptop, as my own computer has died :( anyway I tried to connect it to the internet, which it wouldn't do and so i had to ring virgin media at 25p a minute :cry and he was telling me to do this that and the other, anyway eventually it worked ok. The following morning the connection had gone again, and I have not been able to connect since. (i am using anothers computer)
I can't afford to keep ringing my provider as its just to expensive, but i am really stuck and of course paying for a service i can't use.

    Any advice or suggestions pleaseeeeeee.

    Hi Steve,

I have just tried the alternative number via the link you gave me for technical services, but its asking me for my pin number ??

The Laptop is XP Home, internet explorer and virgin media cable broadband.
No error messages just keeps telling me that there is no connection, all the lights that are relevant in the modem seems ok.

I can't remember to be honest and i couldn't fully understand him or his accent.I was that worried about the cost of it all, that i just wanted to get on with it, and end the call.

He mentioned something about the device manager (i think) and ports etc.

Not much to go on is it.

If you don't want to try phone numbers then another option is to start reading on the Virgin Media Cable forum
    http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/
to see if you can find a solution to your problem.

    Out of curiosity:

Click START, then RUN, then type in: cmd (press enter).

At the c:\ prompt type the following

    ipconfig (press enter)

    Give us the result. :)

Hi to you all and a very Happy New year.

I eventually sent the laptop (to a family friend) to be wiped and reset and reconfig'd and i get it back today sometime (so fingers crossed) and I am going to connect it via ethernet as opposed to usb this time, ntl left me the cable years ago when i first had broadband installed, so i will let you know the outcome of it all later.

    Hi,

I have now managed to get this laptop up and running on the internet. My friend took it back to its original state, with system restore disk and he told me it should be like new. But this laptop is full of viruse's, I have downloaded the trial version of
    AVG spyware
    AVG free edition

the 1st scan i did it found 111 viruses
    the 2nd scan found 94
    the 3rd one found 111
the 4th scan (tonight) found 265 virus's and trojans etc.

I performed a scan on both AVG's last night and got rid of everything and then turned the laptop off, turned it back on tonight and there was hundreds of them. How is it possible.

Each time they are healed or sent to the Vault, but the next time i switch on the Laptop and do a scan, there's more of them and they seem to multiply each time.

I don't know what to do.

    suggestions anyone.

    kriss.

Unfortunately once you have them, it's hard to get rid of them fully. System restore doesn't work for them either as far as I know. You would have to wipe your HD and do a clean install of XP.

I would suggest you go over to the Malware Forum at this point and go through the READ & RUN ME FIRST http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 thread and post your results in a new thread.
