Ok, not sure if this is necessarily in the right place but here goes.....

I'm running a copy of XP and have come down w/ a nasty malware/spyware/grayware infestation. I've run Avast, Spybot, HouseCall, Adaware and done a system rollback to no avail. I'm thinking my only (best) option at this point is to reformat and start anew. It's no big hassle and everything I can re-obtain w/in a short hour or 2.

My problem is --- I've searched long and hard and cannot find my copy of XP. However, my roommate has his disc that is running on his computer.

Is it possible for me to run the reformat w/ his disc and not cause any issues w/ either PC or do I need to either get a crack or search even more for my disc?

    Thanks immensely in advance!!!!

Before you reformat, why don't you give our Authorized Malware Fighters the opportunity to help you. Follow this link step by step and when you are done, start a new thread in the Malware Forum and post the logs as indicated

should you decide that you want to go ahead and reinstall xp. i'd get everything you want off of there (including your key). your key should also be on your label on your tower (it should match, unless it's been changed before).

is your roomates disk xp home or pro (what was your version)? is their disk a microsoft xp disk? or is it a disk from their manufacturer (ie - dell, gateway)? if it is a ms disk, then you should be able to use it and insert your key (provided it is xp home - xp home, or xp pro - xp pro, meaning that if the disk is for pro, and you have a xp home key, it won't work). if their disk is from their manufacturer (and you have a different manufacturer), it more than likely won't work. if you have the same manufacturer, and it's a similar comp, you might be able to use it, and change your key accordingly. another option is to call your manufacturer, and try and order replacement disks. someone else had to order theirs (another thread i answered), and it cost them @ $25 for the disk, and s&h.

i've provided a link below to some xp disks. g/l, sos
