I am a computer dummy. and i need help

I have an error that showes up. (svchost.exe - application error)
(the instruction at "0xtc923845" refrenced memory at "0x00000000" the memory could not be read.)

when this showes up my computer goes nuts. the color scheme changes, the computer slowes down, sometimes I can not get on the internet. I usually have to do a hard kill and restart to get rid of the problem. when I restart everything runs fine till the error pops up again

    Help!

What version of windows are you running? (also mention the service pack). Also give a bit more information as to when this started and if you have tried to do anything to fix it. Sometimes fixes make the situation worse so we need to know if you did anything in the hopes of fixing it.
I'm seeing two causes: windows update is misconfigured or malware.

I was just checking on this and found plodr there when I got back. (Hi plodr.)
    I'll throw this in however:

I came to the same conclusion as plodr.

I think you will find the error is actually --
    (svchost.exe - application error)
(the instruction at "0x7c923845" referenced memory at "0x00000000" the memory could not be read.)
A couple of typos fixed in there - could be important if someone is searching for the error.

Are you aware that a 'Hard Kill' means turning the computer off, then turning it off at the wall switch, so there is no power going to the computer at all?

You can find your Service Pack by going to :
Start>Right click on Mt Computer>click on Properties>Click on the General tab (if not already open).
The Service Pack is listed under System near the top of the page.

My service pack is 3. No I did not know what a hard kill was I guess. I just have to hold the on off switch in until the computer shuts down. Like I said I do not know much.

    thanks again

It might pay to do a hard kill now anyway - it can fix some intermittent problems.

You may have fixed your problem by going through the Read and Run Me First steps. Are you still having the problem, or does it take a while for it to happen?

I see you had/have a problem with Whitesmoke. That may have been dealt with already, but I see from this thread (with some brilliant work by Kestrel :)):
... that it can be hard to get rid of entirely. You may need to pay a visit to the Malware forum if your problems continue.

ka tee, we don't read any of the files you attached in this part of the forum.

If you want the malware fighters to check that you do not have any malware, start here http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=35
click the new thread button near the top left and post your files there. One of the malware fighters will be along - it may take awhile for someone to look because they can get really busy staring at lots of logs.
If they determine your computer is clean, come back to this thread and we'll continue with trying to fix what is wrong.

    Here's the link http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=237825
you might want to post it in malware so they can glance here and see what is the problem.
