Hey, I'm having major problems with my computer that I haven't seen ever before. Please help!! Thanks!

When I turn my computer on, XP runs and I come to the log-in screen, I choose my name and boot my desktop. However, my icons come up for a few seconds and then disapear, leaving me with my background picture and nothing else. I cant click or press anything, it is VERY frustrating and happens every time. PLeeeeeease help.

    THanks!!

Have you tried booting into safe mode and see if you have the same problem? Also try running a virus scan.
Was anything installed prior to this happening? Windows updates, patches, software, etc.?
Also, bring up the task manager and see if you see explorer.exe running. Note if anything else is running, and what do you system resources look like.

You may not have to format! My suggestion works 2 ways a.) boot into safemode open "Run" type "command", press "ok". In the DOS menu type "chkdsk /r", and type "Y" for yes. Know restart your machine and let windows do the rest. You can also run the "chkdsk /r" command from the Win XP Repair! section.

    Hey

I think u might have deleted the LOGONUI file or maybe a virus or somthing got it. This file is the one that displays your login section in xp.

To restore it all u need to do is pop in the xp reinstall cd then. turn off your computer, then turn on your computer and while xp is loading press f8 (or what ever bios is)this will bring u into bios. In bois redirect the computer to boot form cd. Then restart your computer again. a blue screen will popup u select install xp, then it will ask u to reinstall xp or to repair it, u want to repair it. this will repair files that may have been deleted or even have say a virus.

    Good Luck :)

This repairs the windows installation files and such. It is a combination similar to SFC and Scandisk in Windows 98, ME, 2K

I'm a believer that a "repair" job is basically just to get the system back up, so you can get your data copied off of there. Then, wipe the slate clean, and give it a fresh install.
You'll get your system operating, but you haven't taken care of what caused the problem in the first place. You could spend hours trying to get it fixed. On a decent system, you can reinstall windows in just less than an hour.
Either you have deleted explorer.exe, it has become corrupted, or you have a little friend in there that keeps overwriting it (virus).
If YOU deleted (via cleaning up your system), then a repair job is in order, and should work. If it's one of the latter two, then even after you have it up and running, you will have the issue again.
If it were my call, repair, backup, then reformat. Do run the chkdsk once you get it up, to check for any disk errors. If you have disk errors after a reformat, then you got a dodgy disk.

That's not correct and completely misleading.

A repair, if it's successful will fix the problem.

illchild14, your best options are to try a repair, CHKDSK, and perhaps system file checker and System Restore?

To use System File Checker, go to Start, run (If you can), and type in sfc /scannow and you will need your Windows CD.

If it won't let you then your options are limited to the above.

Not correct and misleading? It's a personal preference. You spill something on your trousers, you wipe it. I prefer to wash them. It's kinda like that. Which is right, which is wrong? I do repair jobs on customers PC (at their request), and 75% of the time I get called back out because the problem usually crops up again, or is related, or it got worse. It may take a month or so, but it happens. If anything is misleading, it's telling people to just run repair, and it will fix their problem. Your only fixing a result or symptom of the problem. Again though, it's personal preference. If you got hours to spend troubleshooting a corrupted OS, then that's fine.

If you read below, this person CANNOT get to the Start button.

That has nothing to do with facts.

It may be your preference to reinstall, but the Repair function fixes problems, not as you say "but you haven't taken care of what caused the problem in the first place".

Look in Windows Help and Support to see what Repair does "These features help you solve the problems that can result from adding, deleting, or replacing files"

    Notice the word "solve"?

And if you read above, I said IF YOU CAN, and I even put it in BOLD, as some people only read what they want.

I couldn't have made it any clearer.
