My eldest son switched the power off on our main PC halfway through shutdown (DOH!) and now windows performs a diskcheck at every start up (with no report of subsequent errors). This wouldn't be too bad but what is REALLY baffling me is that though we can connect to the net and use msn and his online game, IE, Firefox and Outlook Express cannot connect.

Does anyone have any ideas? I've reinstalled XP pro but still the problem persists??

    Thanks in advance.

If you've nuked + re-loaded your OS, it might be a hardware issue.

Have you tried re-setting your modem? (turn it off for 1 minute, then turn it back on.)

It's not a hardware problem. Run this command at the DOS prompt chkntfs c: /x

If chkntfs c: /x does not fix the problem then copy the contents of the quote box and save to your desktop as AutochkFix.reg
Double-click AutochkFix.reg, answer Yes to merge the patch with your redistry.

    Reboot

Many many thanks friend...the disk check has now stopped...phew!

However..I'm still baffled why IE and Firefox won't connect to the net??

    Absolutely lost!??

As I said...msn and my sons' online game connect fine..firefox appears to find the website but then just waits and waits until it times out??

Have tried through my router and then through an adsl modem and no difference, this PC (in my own room..linked through ethernet) is working absolutely fine!

    AAARGGHHHH!!!!

    Download
    - Hoster

    • Unzip Hoster to a convenient folder such as C:\Hoster
    • Run Hoster.exe, click Restore Original Hosts and then click OK.
    • Click the X to exit the program.

    AAAAARGH!!!!

    No dice!!

Do you think that uninstalling and then re-installing my router may help? Only concern I have there is that a friend set my router up and I have no idea what the information was that he had to get from my ISP??

    Oh dear...what a mess!

It's so odd that this PC I'm on (running net from ethernet) works fine but the other one (USB connection) has these problems.

It's a software issue. Yes uninstall and reinstall the router. If you can connect the router to the NIC instead of USB that would be preferable.

Well...what can I say apart from thankyou once again for your tenacious approach to this problem, I truly appreciate your efforts and gesture.

I re-formatted earlier today and then re-installed the router....all is now fine again. ;)

Dude, I often browse these excellent boards and though it's highly unlikely....if I can ever be of assistance to you...I most certainly will.

Oh dude, while you're about...may I be so bold as to ask one more piece of advice?

Since I re-installed XP pro...my keyboard is doing the old " inplace of @ thing...I know it's probably a very simple thing but for the life of me I can't change it....

    help!
