I just got my new computer working and I am new to networking computers. My old computer is connected to my D-Link by a cable and my new computer is connected wirelessly to the D-Link. I have it so the computers can axcess each others files and both can use the internet. I have virus scan, spyware scan., and I have a normal windows firewall on each computer. I was wonder if there is a firewall for the network I can use so only my two computers can axcess each others files so no one else can get on though my route and axcess my files. Should the D-Link come with a personal network firewall and if so how do I turn it on. I also want to make it so when my friend brings his labtop he can axcess my connect, but not axcess my files.

Also I was wondering what else can I do with my route besided share files, internet connection, and print though my older computer.

It can be done but it would need more learning.

Option 1. It is Not a Network option but a local protection scheme.

You should leave you Network Setting as is. Get/buy a Folder Lock type of program and install it on each computer.

Such a program let you lock with a password any folder that you like. If some one does not have the password, they cannot get to the files in the folder.

    Example, http://www.newsoftwares.net/folderlock/?id=wt

Option 2. Learn how to set Windows XP Pro permissions (need to switch Off simple file sharing).

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304040

    Option 3. The Network way.

If your Router let you reserve IPs, you can set it so that the DHCP Server would always assign the same IP for your two computers.

Most 3rd party Software Firewall (like Norton) let you set the specific computers that are allowed to share Files on the LAN.

You can adopt the principle that is described here, http://www.ezlan.net/faq#trusted

Any computer that is Not in the trusted Zone (like a friend’s laptop) would be able to share the Internet, but would Not share your files.

General issues of File Sharing here, http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html

Where can I find a free firewall that has trust zone and restricted setting or does the standard windows xp firewall have those setting and if so how do I set them?

Sorry about double posting can't find the edit.

Here is the D-Link I have http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=316. It says it has a personal firewall I just need to know how to set it up.

Zone Alarm is a free firewall you can install on your computers and can be setup to allow only your 2 computers to access each other and both access the internet. Then when your friend comes over, he can access the internet but not your computers

Another solution would be to setup usernames and passwords on both computers. That would prevent anyone from accessing your shared directories unless you have given them a username and password on that computer.

Your firewall in your router should allready be on by default.

Zone Alarm came with the D-Link but it said it was only a 30 day free trail.

I read both and the first said that the route as a firewall on it that can't be shuf off and if someone trys to hack into computers it worked not know which computer to hack into and get confused, but what would not stop someone close by trying to network and I looked at the second one I did not see network wallfires that alone trusted zones.

You can prevent others from connecting to your wireless router by either enableing MAC Filtering in the router and/or using WEP inside the router. Personally, I only use MAC filtering because WEP slows the connection a little.

Zone Alarm is a good firewall and the free version is available here

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/ZoneAlarm_Free_d388.html

It can prevent everyone from accessing your computer unless they are specificaly allowed in the Zone.
