Okay I have been trying to help my mom on her computer. She is using Windows 98.
She recently upgraded her AOL to 9.0 and everything she said was going fine. She then downloaded Mcafee and everything went downhill from there.
I got everything removed of Mcafee in the computer including from the registry; however, she is now getting an illegal operation issue when she tries to play any game on the internet or going to sites that require a download of software to run certain programs.
She stated she talked to a few people and they told her to upgrade to internet explorer 6, which she did and she still is getting the issue.
Not only this is an issue, but the C drive is not allowing any CD Rom discs to run, it is like it isn't reading them at all because I was going to try to see if she could upgrade to Windows XP, but I couldn't do it.
So you are aware as well, a lady put in more memory into her computer as well.
    Any idears you experts?????????????????

1- How did you remove mccaffee from the registry. I assume you used a registry editor?
2- If you are somewhat computer literate, you should reboot and press either delete or whatever your computer tells you (Watch the screen as it reboots) and get into the Bios. Look for a section for boot devices. Make sure that the CD ROM is set first, then the floppy and finally the hard drive. This should get the CDROM drive to boot.
3- If you can do this, then you can upgrade to XP. You may have to reinstall current drivers and some programs again. Make sure you also install SP2 and all windows updates.
4- Best yet is to reformat and install everything. It akes time, but you will notice a great improvement. Initially install what you need - internet, word..and the rest over several days. Once everything is complete. Run a good registry editor, reboot and defrag.
5- If you have a CD burner and either Nero or Roxio. Make an image of the drive as a back-up.

How sweet of you to answer. Still do not know about the CD Ram, however, the same issues are occuring when going into Yahoo or Pogo games. No problem with Microsoft games. And, all the Yahoo and Pogo games can be played on AOL, no problem, that is until she gets kicked off AOL.
By the way, she is running Windows 98.
My Mom finally checked what the problem was with and the results were Internet Explorer said that there was an Invalid Page Fault in Module MSJAVA.DLL. And then, of course a whole bunch of garbage that she would never understand.
She went onto Google search and was there advised to go to Java.com and download their up to date Java program. She did it and no change. She changed back from Internet Explorer 6.0 to 5.0 and it made no difference.
    Any ideas?
Hope you do not mind, I gave her your email address for her to write to you directly should she not be able to get help locally. Have a great week, Taunya

You cannot, I repeat, cannot upgrade to XP by booting off of the CD. You will break your previous OS by installing it, and will have to reinstall all of your applications.

I have no problem with your mom contacting me.

I would first try uninstalling and reinstalling AOL.

A free registry editor such as Regseeker could also help.

    Keep me informed directly.

funkyecat, while it appears you have a genuine desire to assist in helping, your offer to take the help outside of the forum totally defeats the purpose of having the forum to begin with. By taking the help private mistakes made such as the one you posted in post #2 of this thread are problematic if not corrected and in some cases, can result in totally corrupting the operating system or loss of critical data.

Additionally, threads where assistance is taken private remain unresolved thus affecting those that are searching the forum for answers. The purpose of the forum is to ask question and have those questions/threads be worked through until the issue is resolved IN the forum.

In future, please do not offer to assist users privately.

    Welcome to MajorGeeks Angelicmyst73! :)

It is advisable that you continue working through the issue with your mothers computer here in the forum rather than taking it private with one member. We have some long standing members (look at their post counts and join dates) with extensive backgrounds in various IT fields who can assist you. It can be difficult to troubleshoot a computer issue without actually having the computer right there in front of you so it is better to have input from more than one user..I can't stress that enough when dealing with any forum.

Good luck! And hang in there...the guys here at MG's will get your mom fixed up!:)

    Thank you Abby,
I cant say i know the problem, but many people here may. This site gives learning curves like no other.. and to personalize somthing that is asked in a public forum, i would say get your own forum, and site!
    please continue :D

Maybe try the VSCleanupTool.exe to uninstall McAfee completely (May have to reinstall the McAfee tool before the complete uninstall will work properly)

Also the symptoms described sounds like adware/spyware/etc. that have taken control of the machine (Though a broken install of antivirus/firewall can do the same), in either case then it can be a good idea to visit the Spyware-forum
