Helpassistant and IE crashing problems.

    Hello,

    Four days ago, I got this virus:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-antivirus-system-pro

    I used Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to remove infected files and thought everything was fine.

    Three days ago, my computer mysteriously re-booted without prompting from me. When it restarted, a HelpAssistant file appeared in Documents and Settings and started randomly populating itself with folders and files. Lots.

    I ran Malwarebytes' again and it found nothing. I ran AVG and it found three files which it removed.

    But I continued having the HelpAssistant user/folder problem. If I delete it it re-appears on reboot. If I change permissions to the folder, it creates a HelpAssistant 2 folder. And so on.

    Also, Internet Explorer crashes immediately upon opening with an "Unhandled Exception" error.

    Today I ran through your Malware Removal Guide. Another infected file was found and removed.

    However, after completing all of the steps, I'm still getting the HelpAssistant folder and Internet Explorer is still crashing (although now it opens. Before it would crash on start. Now it only crashes when I navigate away from about:blank).

    I (hope) I have attached all of the logs you need. Please let me know if I've miffed something.

    Any advice?

    1. You were using avg as an anti-virus but I see you currently don't have any installed. We will deal with that a little later.

    2. You have a Master Boot Record infection. We will need to boot to the Recovery Console to remove this infection.

    Now boot to the Recovery Console and run the fixmbr to clear a Master Boot Record infection that you have.

    You can read the below to help you do this:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

    After running the fixmbr command and boot back to normal mode, continue with the below.

    3. Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    DirLook::
    C:\huh
    c:\documents and settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\PCHealth
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\LocalLow

    File::
    c:\documents and settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\prvlcl.dat
    c:\windows\is-G6N26.exe
    c:\windows\is-G6N26.lst
    c:\windows\is-G6N26.msg

    Folder::
    c:\documents and settings\HelpAssistant.VALUED-0021DFD2.000
    c:\documents and settings\HelpAssistant.VALUED-0021DFD2
    c:\documents and settings\HelpAssistant

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    4. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix.

    5. Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    Holy crap! Thanks! I think that worked.

    (Sorry for the late reply...I sort of...uh...deleted the boot sector by accident. That was fun!)

    New logs are attached. Please let me know if you see anything hinkie.

    THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! You're a saint.

    Cheers,
    John

    You're very welcome.

    1. Why do you have files from avg etc in the below directory? If you do not need them then please delete them.

    2. I think you ought to give the avg removal tool a run.

    After running it make sure you also delete any remaining AVG folders in Program Files and Documents & Settings/Application Data directories.

    Reboot the machine and then run Ccleaner (not the registry section)

    3. Now to clear up from the MBR infection you had.

    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Folder::
    c:\documents and settings\HelpAssistant

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.

    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    5. Time to install some anti virus now:

    How to Protect yourself from malware!

    (Scroll down to segment two - anti virus and choose from the list of reccommended.)

    6. If this below bold folder still exists after running combofix, then try to delete it yourself in safe mode if necessary:

    7. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix.

    8. Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!
