I am new to this forum but not new to forum alltogether. My name is Marlene and though I am fair with computers but I am not familiar with terms or very technical situations like posting logs and things like that.

I have two computers that I believe have virus's. First, my laptop. A few weeks ago it started not wanting to hook up to the internet. I tried running my antivirus (McAfee -paid for) but it would not find the virus. I tried to run Microtrend housecall and it would finish running. I kept getting "housecall has stopped running" I ran Malware bytes and it would find PUPs, I would delete them but they would start running again. Finally, the computer just kept crashing. 2 weeks later I gave up. I set the computer back to factory settings and lost my microsoft office software :(. When it booted I ran McAfee and it found nothing. However, Malwarebytes was finding PUPs still. I decided to disable McAfee and instal AVAST! It found a trojan but I do not remember the name of it. I cleaned it and the computer seemed to be running fine for a few days. NOw it is crashing and will not even boot unless in safemode. I am at a loss.
    Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks
    Mar

I also just realized I have a private message that I need to run a tool. I will run that now.

    Hello and welcome.

You should not be receiving private messages telling you to run any tools. All our help is done directly on the forums...particularly when it comes to malware removal which is to be done by our experts in our Malware forum. Please disregard any advice you got in a private message and follow these procedures: READ & RUN ME FIRST Malware Removal Guide (incl. spyware, virus, trojan, hijacker)

Then post your logs in a new thread in the Malware Removal forum.

Ok, I'm doing the "read me run me". How do I know if I have more than 1 firewall? Also, I have been getting a message that McAfee firewall is being disabled. It will let me turn it back on that then within seconds i get a pop up that it has been disabled.

    Hi Mar

You mentioned McAfee....that is typically full protection which is AV and firewall. Have you installed any other firewalls? They would only be on there if you installed them. Windows firewall will usually shut off if you have a 3rd party one installed.

As far as things getting disabled, that could very likely be a sign that you are infected. Some malware will shut down protection you have.

I'm going to transfer this thread over to the Malware Forum. Keep going with the Read and Run me and post your logs. You will not need to start a new thread since I'm moving this one. Just keep everything here.

    Good luck.
