It can also save money where using up costly software licences are involved. Take a look at Macrium Reflect.

I rate mastering imaging the single most important skill to acquire. It completely insures you against your own mistakes, bad installs, system malfunction, virii and even disk failure. I strongly encourage you to make the effort.

+1 for the comments on imaging. It's not really so hard to learn. The only investment is in installing the software and then burning the rescue disk.

I resisted imaging for a long time because I was worried I would mess something up. Also, I didn't understand the concept of a rescue disk. It didn't register with me that I could start something other than Windows that could perform functions too. I was lol the first time I used a boot rescue disk like the Macrium one.

It's really just press one button to create an image and then only one button to restore the OS. The cool thing is the whole thing only takes like 15-20 minutes for either. Just create an image or two and keep an updatable backup of your personal files (pics/vids/documents), and you are really set to be back up after a problem in a matter of minutes with no entering a product key or anything...

I second spending time figuring out how to do an image.
If a Windows update or heaven forbid one of those ransomeware malware trojans gets into your computer and makes it unbootable or Windows inaccessible, you spend about 30 minutes tops restoring the image and you are back in business. With the ransomeware, there is no guarantee that after you pay a ridiculous amount of money you will ever get your computer working, it just make sense to have a secure emergency plan.

Please conside it time well spent. Read about it, start asking questions about what to do. Buy yourself an external portable drive to save images on and do it.

I'll admit, the first one is scary. I take a new computer and read up on what bloatware can be removed. After I have it set up leaner, I make an image on DVDs. I use that instead of the manufacturer's restore/recovery discs or recovery partition to bring the computer back to factory condition because then I don't have to clean off the crud again.

I used to image about every 4 - 6 months but now with several external hard drives (we have 4 Win 7 computers in the house), I image all about once a month after I've done the Windows updates. Usually I just do the C partition but maybe every 6 - 8 months, I'll image the entire computer.

Those images have saved my bacon a few times. One the electric went off, totally unexpected because there were no storms. I was on an old laptop where the battery would not hold a charge. When I booted up, I got the dreaded white letters on black screen no OS! I popped in the last image I made, waited while it restored and I had a working laptop again. Granted I needed to do several months of updates and install a few programs but it was better than starting from a disc that was about 7 years old!
