You might try posting this in software, and as Erico6 said, why are you copying it? (in pirate voice) "We shan't help thee with any piracy, laddy, else you'll be walkin the plank and visiting Davey Jones' locker, Arrr!"

    ;)

I will, but only if it involves loot and plunder. Software piracy is for nancy-pirates that wear bows.

They dropped support for 98 i don't think anyone cares about 98 piracy. M$ isnt going to sue on something they do not charge for anymore, or support, or want to care about.

I dont even see why anyone would want to copy it anyway lol I hate 98.

Just because they dropped support doesn't magically make it legal to pirate the software.

Well this poses the question, how can you pirate it if you cant legally buy it in stores or from microsoft?

Does not even mean the person is trying to pirate it. But I guess conspiracy and theft overcomes thoughts of anyone trying to just make a back up of an old beat up CD or something. Not like he asked windows XP or 2000.

So if I download and install DOS, another unsupported dead O/S from M$ does that make me a bad person who is breaking the law?

the microsoft stance on this is that you can buy a current license, and then apply that license to the older software.

For no longer published software, people debate about the ethics of it, but yes, it's still breaking the law. They won't hunt you down and sue you as a private individual, but businesses that get caught doing it DO get taken to court and fined over it.

Since it's no longer supported, it's usually possible to find it... cheap... in stores that carry used software.

Obviously, making a backup copy of your OWN disk, for your own backup is just fine, but most folks don't have a burning desire to do that. Pun intended.

We're just asking questions, there's no conspiracy, except me conspiring with myself. :D A question is not an accusation, anymore than an accusation makes someone guilty. If he's legit, he's legit. I just know Major Geeks tends to steer clear of these kinds of questions and threads. So, I'll just hit that little button that says "Report this to a moderator" and if they don't care, I don't care! :)

And no, you're not a bad person because you intall DOS....We're all bad people, regardless of whether or not we install DOS!! :D

I do everything I can to not install DOS or 98 lol. But yes I am a bad person if I do

Well, strangley enough it is perfectly legal to make a copy of a XP disk. Because in actuality, the software itself isn't worth anything. If you don't have a licence key you can't use the software, and so the licence key is what you would be "stealing". And using the same licence on many machines is illegal, if its a 1 CPU licence.

Anyway, copying XP is legal, otherwise slipsteam Cd's wouldn't exist. You can copy as many XP CD's as you like, and give them to all the people you like, but if they don't have a licence key then they can't do anything with it. If they do legally have a licence key then they are allowed to use that software.

You get in trouble when you start distributing licence keys along with the software.

Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, copying CD's is fine as long as it is for legitimate use, I.E you are using a valid key to use it.

Just wanting to make sure that it was okay, so anyway, now that that is cleared up....

vince_inn, do you have a burner and burning software on your computer? If so, tell us what software you have, and we can walk you through the steps to help you get it done.

And sorry about all the interrogation. I tried to lighten things up with my pirate accent, but I guess pirates just come off sinister, no matter what you do! :D
