Hi, Need Advice On West Yorkshire Police Virus And Best Protection

Hi there, just joined the other day and looking for some advice on a Virus I got on my laptop yesterday as I'm no expert on any of this.

It's called the West Yorkshire Police Virus and (if you've never heard of it) takes over your computer. I found the way to get access is via Safe Mode which I was able to do and eventually clear it doing a System Restore backdating 1 week. I can now use laptop and did a scan with McAfee and SuperAntiSpyware, which came up clean, but as they didn't detect it in the first place, I have no idea if it's completely removed and lurking around somewhere!

Anyway, as I have McAfee Total Security and SuperAntiSpyware I was wondering why these two didn't detect this Virus or is that just the way it is with these products?

Or might this be the reason - my McAfee and Super are scheduled to do a scan at 4AM and 2AM respectfully but I switch my laptop off at the mains when not using i.e. I work days M-F so use in the evening but each night I switch off at the mains. Is that wrong? Is that maybe why I got that Virus or would get any Virus?

My McAfee is up next month but thinking of trying something different so can you recommend something better for both? I have had Malwarebytes before but that affected my McAfee so had to get rid of it.

Uninstall old versions of Java

 

Thanks thisisu - so I'm not the only one!

I have uninstalled Java but should I now install again using the link in your post?

I also downloaded IOBit Malware Fighter from this site and it found 31 items, no idea what the hell they were, but cleared them anyway.
