Are you sure that someone has not intentially blocked the site by adding it to your Restricted Zone or by putting a redirect in your Hosts file? Does someone else actually administer this PC? I know you use it, but do others use it and who is the administrator.

This does not sound like malware.

I'm not sure what you are trying to say! What was closed?

You need to attach the other 4 logs requested in the READ & RUN ME for us to verify your malware status. Thus far you are clean.
    • CounterSpy
    • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
    • Bitdefender - from step 6
    • Panda Scan - from step 6
    • HijackThis

    Hi Chas Happy holidays

I first posted this message on the Networking forum:

You guys are indispensible when all the support lines are close down.

I have a new PC, Intel core TM2, 1GB RAM, 250GB storage running on 1GB broadband. Yet I cannot access Hi5, it keeps timing out with the usual crap; "The page cannot be displayed - The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site " etc. I have a myriad Christmas messages I can't reply to.

It is not the site, as everyone else I have asked gets through straight away.
Neither is it the provider as other NTL users access Hi5 easily.
    I have tried:-
    - checking and correcting the Internet Options
    - temporarily shutting down Bullguard, at a risk
    - deleting Yahoo and Google toolbars altogether (you dont need half a dozen firewalls)
    - installing Java Runtime Environment
    - installing & running Firefox to try and bypass IE.

Nothing works. Please can anyone help?

    Then Goldfish replied:

Hi there! Merry Christmas and all that FPRIVATE "TYPE=PICT;ALT="

Please go to the Malware Removal forum and follow the stickies at the top of the forum. I suspect that this is a malware issue, and if this turns out to be the case, you'll need to make a new thread in that forum with the appropriate details.

    Thanks!

I followed his instructions but found that the Sticky thread was closed, so I started another thread. Alas, All the malware cops found nothing, even Adaware! So I havent yet posted an HJT analysis; is there any point? My only AV / IS is Bullguard which couldnt stop a vampire with a cross.

So I cannot work out what is stopping me. Whatever it is I dont think it is a malware matter. What do you think?

I'm going back to ask Networking as well (Sigh!)

You need to complete the instructions I already gave you in message # 3 and also address the questions I asked. Otherwise we are done since what you have posted thus far reveals no problems related to malware.

Also you mentioned in your first message that this is a new PC. Can your old PC access the site when connected the same way as the new one? What is the physical path from your PC to the internet (i.e., PC --> Router ---> Cable Modem ---> ISP )

Also you never said whether you checked to make sure you are not blocking the site in your firewall.

NOTE: Yahoo and Google Toolbars are not firewalls.

    Hi Chas
Hope u had a happy christmas and new year.

You have hit the nail on the head. I re-connected the old PC which connected quickly until just before Christmas. Now even that does not access Hi5 at all; i.e. it times out.

So it either Ntlworld (the ISP) or Hi5 itself. But what could they do to stop what was a perfect connection?
