Went to enable hibernation ending with an error stating the Power Management could not be started due to being called to another process. I have been letting my computer go into Standby, really using the Standby through the Start Menu, shutdown, then standby, for the past several days. I would like to save what I have up and running on the desktop through hibernation but now I have an error. I am not sure what processes may already be running to keep hibernation from being started. Thanks everyone!

So when you click on Power Options in the control panel, is that when you are given the error message?

Are there Any other functions in the CP that are not accessible?

    Any other odd performance issues?

What about all of the above in safe mode?

And what are you running for security software?

I reached the Hibernation through Display Properties, going to the screensaver tab, then to the bottom in the Monitor section clicking on the Power button, inside is where I found the hibernation tab. After make a tick to enable then clicking on apply the error message shows. This shows whether accessing the Power Options via Display Option or via Control Panel, both show the same error message.

    None I am aware of.

IE8 does not have the context menu option to open in a new tab, also seems slow to start or to start a new tab. No other issues otherwise.

I am uncertain what I should look to do while in safe mode, I can reach safe mode but rarely make any changes while inside.

I have a full liscense Internet Security Suite from ZoneAlarm. Malwarebytes is nearby but rarely need to use it. I do run tests from time to time. Nothing if ever shows. I can ran any test and post the results if needed.

These two options should be available when you right click on an Existing Tab:
    • New Tab --------- Ctrl+T
    • Duplicate Tab -- Ctrl+K

You might want check Tab Settings:
Tools -> Internet Options -> General
Tab settings button is near the bottom.

Hibernation and Standby are not available in Safe Mode.

What was the actual error message, verbatim.
(No, I'm not asking for a floppy disk.) :-D

cool! love shortcuts but usually i am using the mouse to click on links to open up in a new tab, hence the need for the context menu to show 'open in a new tab' instead of the option to 'open in a new window', how drab to go to a completely new window... i want to open a link in the current window in a new tab :-o XP Professional I have used before had it, the current XP Home edition is not having this option, any reg entries? I don't mind looking and working with the registry. I will even make a reg edit and make a simple 'one click' to add the entry, just need to know the where's and what's :yum

side note, I have been using another shortcut to open links in a new tab (again not by choice but because it does work). I can use ctrl + the left mouse button to open links in a new tab... this still is not the context menu (shortcut menu) showing the 'open in a new tab'

I have set the tab settings from any changes I have made back to the default, no change in the context menu...

cool, but the hibernation does not work while running windows normally and question or comment was from someone else, but i did note this for future, thank you...

first post has a really terrible photo of the error message... :p

Sorry I got you side tracked on the Tabs stuff when your original question was
    about Hibernation.

I didn't see a photo or an attachment - maybe something with my browser.

I have Win XP Home SP3 with IE8 and right click on a link in IE8 does show the
    two options:

Don't know why you are not seeing that or if a registry tweak to add those
    is possible/available.

Seems to me that Ctrl+Left click on a link and opening the context menu for a
link and then using Open in New Tab accomplish the same thing.

    OK, thanks.

Now, after looking at your image, this makes more sense.

It looks to me as though the problem may be with the system file:
    C:\hiberfil.sys

I'll look into this later, but you might try this:

disable hibernation through that dialog and reboot.
If the file is still there, delete the file.

make sure you have set hidden files and operating system files to be Visible.
    from Windows Explorer file manager:
Tools -> Folder Options -> View tab
    under 'Hidden files and folders'
tick 'Show hidden files and folders

also, UNcheck 'Hide protected operating system files'

This will ensure that the hibernation file is Visible.

You may want to reverse those changes as a safety precaution after
completing this entire process. That is at your own discretion.
I personally leave all of those files and folders Visible.

Once you have deleted hiberfil.sys and removed it from the recycle bin should it happen to end up there, reboot and try setting hibernation ON.

O.k., the installation is fresh within a month or so and I never really used hibernation on any other installation let alone this one. The time I went to enable hibernation was the first attempt and had never been enabled before. I will look for the file and change settings accordingly.

    Some research just found this:

Another post referring to the above...

    The above quotes drawn from:
Power Policy Manager unable to reserve hibernate file

Someone reported that this is/was a common error and that one site was
    Selling a solution. :(

This was a viable solution for myself as well, I have a version of Alcohol 120 installed on my pc. Uninstalled and rebooted with the option going through as it should have. Now to reinstall the software and move on. Thanks mjnc

    :cry

    issue not resolved,

I was able to tick hibernation, click apply/ok...and then reboot,
    it is still ticked but...
I don't have the option when shutting down to hibernate, i still get standby, restart, and turn off... normally the stand by changes to hibernate...

looks like when i hover over the standby i am to press shift to change the feature to hibernate... this may be it... ;)

Yes. Hibernate never shows on the shutdown dialog by default.
You Always have to press Shift to have the Standby change to Hibernate.

What was it that fixed the error that you got when trying to Enable Hibernation?

I had an installation of Alcohol 120. Uninstalled the program, reboot, enabled, reboot, and I was able to have the option to hibernate, standby, shutdown, or restart.
