On my windows xp computer, I got a virus. I couldnt make out what it was, so I went to system restore, and went to a previous date. When I did that all seemed fine, until I couldn't find my music files that I use on pro tools. Everytime I load up protools, it quits right when it is setting up midi parameters. So I created a different admistrator account on my computer, and got past that. I went to my control panel, clicked on files and folders and click show hidden files. And presto. However I am unable to use it in one of my computer user accounts. How do I repair the computer to where I can use pro tools under any user account. Again I don't know what kind of virus got me.

any help would be great . thanks.

You may have to reinstall Pro Tools. I remember back at the end of 2010/early 2011 I was using Malwarebytes, spybot s&d, super antispyware, kaspersky removal tool and I cleared any problems. Another good one is dr. web cureit! (anti virus).

    I hope it helps.

Thanks for the response. If I delete and reinstall protools, what will happen with all my music files? They are all in my "D" drive and not my c drive. Its weird when I go to my d drive and access the files under a new user account, it works fine. But when I do it under the original account it says microsoft encountered an error, right when its trying to load the midi files. Whats your take?

You have a virus on your computer that needs to be resolved. You could try Kaspersky removal tools 2010 but if they aren't able to be found then try AVG. Install these onto your 2nd account (the one that works).

Deleting a protocol won't affect your music files. My advice is don't try deleting the protocol, TCP/IP UDP and IPX are needed protocols to be online. These changes would globally affect all users on your PC and you'd simply have to reinstall the protocols.

If you're talking about Pro Tools protocols I am not real familiar with it so I can't say except don't do it, there shouldn't be a need, it shouldn't erase your files if you do though. A virus programmer is not normally thinking about affecting programs like Pro Tools to get at people, it is normally the OS that is targeted.

The solution is Kaspersky Removal Tools 2010, Dr. Web CureIt! & Malwarebytes. You could try additional programs like AVG, super anti-spyware and spybot S&D but the three I listed above should work well.

I would also recommend not using system restore because viruses can catalog themselves into it. If you aren't too tech savvy then keep it on. The virus scanners will find the virus regardless.

After the viruses and malware are removed and cleared, if Pro Tools still isn't working right you may have to reinstall it.
