Hidden viruses supposedly found by "technician"

I installed a new WiFi modem and my WiFi printer (Brother) wouldn't work. I called what I thought was Brother tech support but is was, as I later found out, a contractor site in India. I allowed them to take control of my computer to "find out the reason" my new WiFi would not connect to the printer. The guy told me I had hundreds of hidden viruses and malware and he could fix it, but it would cost nearly $200 for a one time fix. I terminated the connection. My question, is there a way to scan my computer and see if there are really "hundreds of hidden viruses and malware programs" on my laptop? Thanks.

 

Thanks. I shall do that. I agree, it was a scam, and I intend to let Brother know that I am not happy.

 

By the way, when I suggested doing a complete system restore and wiping my hard drive he told me it wouldn't work as some viruses embed themselves. Is this true or another strike against these guys?
