    Hi Guys

I'm really sorry if this has already been answered, I'm new to this and not too sure what to do. I've read through soem of th eforums posts so I was able to set up hijack this and get a file of the running processes. What seems to have happened is that soemthing has taken over IE6.0 on my computer, I can't run anything on it normally but, more worrying, is that I can't find my system32 folder anymore. Please help!!!

    HJT log file below

Edit by chaslang: Unrequested inline log removed

I've tried to delete things like the listed R1's in safe mode and so on but they come back again, I really don't know what to do now.....

    Thanks HarryM

Please read the announcement and sticky threads. HJT logs should only be posted when requested and then they must be attachments.

    Please follow the steps below:

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

Are you seeing any messages about Smitfraud.c problems?

I'm sorry that I didn't start off the right way, as I said I'm new to this and I'm panicking a bit about this.
I have followed the instructions set out in the answer you gave and I'm still having a problem. One of the virus checkers has idenified a virus, a worm in fact which is in windows\system32\ but it can't delete it.
I've looked on other forums/threads and I'm pretty sure it's all to do with processes like msole32.exe, popuper.exe intmon.exe and shnlog.exe and so on and I know I should go into safe mode and delete them from the directory and then run hijack this to clean everything up but....that's my problem, window/system32 directory is missing!
    What do I do know?

    Please help, I'm desparate.

That was why I asked you the below question:
Please complete all steps of the procedures I gave you. Take notes on problems you have but complete all the steps including the HijackThis log at the end.

Did you enable viewing of hidden and system files per the tutorial?

There was no messages about smitfraud.c at all, sorry, I did that in your original post but forgot to add it. I have hidden files and folders visible but I can't see system32 even though I know it's there as I can access files from it through the search facility but the folder itself is hidden somehow.

This time I attach the hijack this log file as well, I hope this helps.

If you are using WinXP or WinMe, make sure you have system restore disabled (per the tutorial).
For all OS types, make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Open Control Panel and select Add/Remove Programs look for the below programs and uninstall them if found:
    Search Maid
    Security IGuard
    Virtual Maid

    Now exit Add/Remove Programs.

If you are using WinXP or WinMe, make sure you have system restore disabled (per the tutorial).
For all OS types, make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Please run HijackThis and click on the "Open the Misc Tools Section" button on the open page. Then select "Open process manager" on the left-hand side. Look for the following process (or processes) and one at a time kill them by selecting it and then click "Kill process". Then click yes.
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\msole32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\shnlog.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\popuper.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\intmonp.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\intmon.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\msmsgs.exe
    C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe
    C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe

After killing all the above processes, click "Back".
Then please click "Scan" and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.startsearches.net/search.php?qq=%1

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = http://www.startsearches.net/
    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe, msmsgs.exe
    O2 - BHO: VMHomepage Class - {FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFF} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\hp973E.tmp
    O3 - Toolbar: Adobe PDF - {47833539-D0C5-4125-9FA8-0819E2EAAC93} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Acrobat\AcroIEFavClient.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [FastStart] C:\WINDOWS\system32\svcnut.exe home
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MsConfigs] C:\Program Files\MsConfigs\MsConfigs.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\msmsgs.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\shnlog.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\intmonp.exe
    C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe
    C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe
    C:\Windows\system32\msole32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\hp973E.tmp
    C:\wp.exe
    C:\wp.bmp
    C:\bsw.exe
    C:\Windows\sites.ini
    C:\Windows\popuper.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\svcnut.exe
    C:\Program Files\MsConfigs<--- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\Search Maid<--- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\Security IGuard<--- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid<--- the whole folder
C:\Windows\System32\Log Files <--- the whole folder

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST). Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.

Now reboot in normal mode and continue with the below.

Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad. Then click File and then Save As. Change the Save as Type to All Files. Name the file fixwp.reg and then click save. (make sure you save it somewhere you can find it. Saving it to your Desktop may make that easy.) Double-click on the fixwp.reg file on your desktop (or locate it with Windows Explorer and double click on it if not saved to the Desktop) and when it prompts to add to the registry say yes.
Now please download HOSTER and then follow the below steps.

    • Unzip Hoster to a convenient folder such as C:\Hoster
    • Run Hoster.exe, click Restore Original Hosts and then click OK.
    • Click the X to exit the program.
Now post a new HJT log. And tell me how things are working.

    Hi Again

Thanks for your help so far. I've tried what you said but, although I can kill the msole32.exe process, the others just keep re-starting themselves over and over so I can't kill them.
It means that when I go into safe mode I still see my system32 folder and even searching for the exe files is no good...so I can't complete your instructions this way.

Sorry about this but do you have any other suggestions.

Sorry also about the delay in replying

    Thanks again for your help.

I do not know what you mean by the above. You are supposed to see the system32 folder.

When you say "searching" do you mean Windows search? You should be using Windows Explorer to locate files (make sure viewing of hidden and system files and extensions are enabled per the READ ME).

Try running the whole procedure from safe mode. When you kill the processes, tell me exactly which ones restart. Try killing in a different order.

Hello again...at least it seems to be getting better, what I meant to say earlier is that I can't see the system32 folder, that's my main problem and even when I use th esearch files facility from the start menu, it won't locate the .exe files, even though we know they are there.
That said, now what's happening is that shnlog.exe and intmon.exe are still running, when I kill them they just restart but msole32.exe hasn't reappeared this time, it did before so we must be getting close to the problem but, as you can see from the hjt log, the about:search etc stuff is still there....

    What do you recommend now...

Thanks again for your help and most of all, your patience with me.

Click Start, Run, and enter c:\windows\system32 and click OK.

Does that open Windows Explorer to the system32 folder?

Thank you so much, that did the trick, when I ran the folder on the command line it came up so I was able to delete the offending files/folders in safe mode and then clean up in normal, now everthing is back as it was before.

Thanks again for your time, patience and expertise in helping to sort this out for me.

Your log is clean! So can I assume you are no longer having any problems?
