While downloading a key my computer all of a sudden starts installing AntiVirus Gold. I now have this black background on my desktop with a warning message and an X circled in red with a popup msg stating "Your computer is infected. I'm at my wits end with this and need help to clear up the mess. Any info in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

What do you mean downloading "a key"? Are you talking about cracks for software? If so, bad idea as you can see from your problem.

Please follow ALL the steps below.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps below:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

Okay, I did everything listed "TO THE LETTER" and the X in quick launch is gone but the desktop is still black with warning. Here is the HJT log:

Well now I'm not able to attach the HJT log to this reply. What I am I not doing correctly???

I have no idea! You did not explain what you problem is with attaching the log.
You have to be in Advanced mode and then click Manage Attachments.

I was trying to attach the HJT log file and none of the shortcuts or links work when I click on them. I can't cut & paste either. This was the result of the fixes I believe and now it looks like I'm going to have to do a system recover to get everything back to normal. I do appreciate all of your time and effort thus far. I did learn a lot from this experience! I've never had a situation this bad before... I am open to any other suggestions if you have any...?

Do not do a system recovery! Just post your log as inline (copy and paste it) into your next message. I'll attach it for you. You could just have some active x settings wrong. Let's see what malware we can find in your HJT log.

I'm still not able to attach the HJT log file within the forum but I was able to attach it to the reply email I sent about an hour ago. Hopefully the log will give you some clue as to what is going on with my system..

    Thanks again!

I'm not sure what email you are referring to. Just post the log into your next message (copy and past) so it appears just like this typed text. You do not need to attach it. I will do that for you since you are having a problem with it.

You must remember that NO browsers should be running when using HJT. You had:
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE

    Comments:
LimeWire (older versions) are known to contain malware/adware
BigFix is a resource hog and should only be started as needed. See: http://castlecops.com/s400-BIGFIX_EXE.html

Now click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.

On the page that opens, scroll down to CWShredder Service ... right click the entry, select 'Properties' and press 'Stop Service'. When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the 'Start-up Type' to 'Disabled'. Press 'OK' until you get back to Windows.

Next, run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the "None of the above, just start the program" button at the bottom of the choices. At the lower right, click on the 'Config" button, and then the Misc tools' button ... select 'Delete an NT Service" ... copy/paste the following into the box that opens, and press "OK":

    CWShredder Service

Now scan with HJT and make sure the below entry is gone:

    O23 - Service: CWShredder Service - InterMute, Inc. - C:\Program Files\InterMute\SpySubtract\CWShredder.exe

These is no reason for CWShredder to be running as a service.

If you are using WinXP or WinMe, make sure you have system restore disabled (per the tutorial).

For all OS types, make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).
Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://hsremove.com/done.htm
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://hsremove.com/done.htm
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ShowWnd] ShowWnd.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [4vDLfc4] C:\WINDOWS\yqfyu.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Intel system tool] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hookdump.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\hookdump.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ShowWnd.exe or C:\WINDOWS\ShowWnd.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\yqfyu.exe

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST). Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1) If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2) Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3) If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK.
    When it finishes Click OK.

Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log. And tell us how things are working.

I wasn't able to disable CWShredder Service in services and C:\WINDOWS\yqfyu.exe wasn't found for deletion. Still having some problems with desktop background not displaying at all now. I get a SWDoctor error msg at startup along with a multimedia card reader error stating "Resource is not enough". I still can't utilize the attach feature within this window so I had to copy & paste the log file.

Why couldn't you disable the CWShredder Service? Please explain exactly what happened.

Try doing it after booting in safe mode. This should not be giving you trouble unless Spyware Doctor is getting in the way. Do you have a paid version of Spyware Doctor? If not, you should uninstall it as it will not be of much use since it will not fix anything unless you buy it.

I went into services and right clicked on CWShredder Services and the drop down menu and all that was hilighted to use was "start". On the services page itself CWShredder didn't show the status at all and the startup type was automatic. I went thru the steps as you directed assuming that the service wasn't running. That's where we are now...

We need to get it Stopped. Try changing the Automatic to disabled or manul. Does that work?

Try doing it in safe mode?

If that does not work, while in safe mode, see if you can delete the C:\Spy Tools\CWShredder.exe
file. If you cannot delete it, try renaming the file to CWShredder.xxx
If that works, reboot your PC. And try stopping and disabling the service now.

You did not answer my questions about Spyware Doctor.

CWShredder won't allow me to change anything but I was able to delete the application. Its still showing in services though.

Well if you were able to delete the application. You should now be able to fix the stop/disable the service and fix the line in HJT. See the process in message # 10.

Post a new HJT log either way.
