    Need help getting a friends computer free of malware. I believe I have followed everything correctly from the READ & RUN ME FIRST sticky, with the exception of combofix, which I could not install. These are my notes regarding the 'bumps' incurred as I went through the prep/scan:

    -Removed all instances of JAVA in Add/Remove/Progs, but not without difficulty. Removing the last entry froze the computer & needed a cold boot.

    -Browser hijacked anytime I tried to access the Java homepage in both IE and FFox. Got around it by googling Java and then looked for a site that was not directly related to it but had a link to the SunMicrosystem site. Downloaded & installed the most recent version.

    -Changed MSConfig to boot normally. Froze on Reboot before splash screen. Cold booted. Made it to the desktop before it froze again (never ending hourglass; nothing works, incl. Task Mgr). Cold booted. Full startup this time, but with errors: Windows Installer Error for SAS and HP/tmp/src/setup/psprinters 08 (3x).

    -AOL started (which had been disabled in msconfig) and ran it's own scan (it halted 2 processes). I disabled the automatic scan option.

    -Couldn't install SAS. Following the mnfr. instructions I used gpedit and was then able to install & scan. It found no malware.

    -After Malwarebytes scan & reboot, I had MS errors (MS encountered a prob...) for Device Detector and SAS.

    -Windows Installer error popped up 3x - 'PSPrinter 08 is trying to use an unavailable resource... Error 1706 Installer can't continue'.

    -Combofix would not run (nothing happened) and I was not comfortable connecting to the internet to redownload while all security was disabled, so this was skipped.

    Other scans worked and the resulting Log files are attached - TIA!

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Please double-click the RootRepeal.exe previously downloaded.

    * Select File then Scan
    * On the Select Drives form select drive [ insert drive infected here ] by "ticking" the box for drive [insert drive here] and click OK
    * When the scan is complete - highlight each of the following file(s) (one at a time if more then one is listed) by left clicking it. Then use right mouse click and select the Wipe File option only for each file.
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\MSIVXcount
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\MSIVXheuqsriwwsthibptslwmvlvyntoqrkih.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\MSIVXtquisivlhyfhcovoicwncbhebgiwcxit.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\MSIVXocxqovkwivjudckonhsdebayceotqbsc.sys
    * After Wiping all files, immediately reboot your pc!

    After reboot, download/install/update and run the scanning tools you couldn't run!

    Now let's clean up some junk:

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
    to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Now run CCleaner and after make sure that you clean out everything in this folder:
    C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    A new RootRepeal log and the Combo log if it now runs.
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Thanks for the help Tim!! Here are my notes and the new logs are attached... I believe I did everything right and hope everything looks good this time?

    -Ran RootRepeal; wiped only the files you indicated. Rebooted.

    -Chkdsk autoran on startup.

    -Downloaded, updated & scanned SAS; found 9 threats (rootkit Agent/Gen-MSIVX); quarantined and removed; rebooted.

    -Errors re: PSPRINTERS 08 on reboot; canceled.

    -Updated and scanned with MalwareBytes; found 5 Trojan.BHO & Trojan.Agent; removed & rebooted.

    -Downloaded and Ran ComboFix

    -Created FixMe.Reg file and merged with registry; SUCCESSFUL

    -Encountered several "Data Prevention Execution" Errors when attempting to use My Computer to find the CCleaner file; Ran CCleaner successfully.

    -Could not delete all the files within the Temp folder; access was denied or the files were 'in use'; even after a reboot. Let me know if you need the names of the files that remain.

    -Ran RootRepeal again; log attached.

    -Ran GetLogs.bat

    Progress. Just a few more items to deal with.

    Run this: Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    Now:

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    xygu

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\dxey.sys

    Folder::
    C:\Program Files\Fast Browser Search

    RegLockDel::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Classes\URLSearchHook.ToolbarURLSearchHook\CLSID]
    @DACL=(02 0000)
    @="{CA3EB689-8F09-4026-AA10-B9534C691CE0}"

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Classes\URLSearchHook.ToolbarURLSearchHook.1\CLSID]
    @DACL=(02 0000)
    @="{CA3EB689-8F09-4026-AA10-B9534C691CE0}"

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{FCBCCB87-9224-4B8D-B117-F56D924BEB18}]

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    The wizard is stumped by one item in your logs, so lets see about removing it.

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    nivged

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\mhbdk.sys

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.

    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Attach the new combo log.

    Then we best nip the rumors in the bud......Thine logs are clean!

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners.They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Then let it be known to all...

    :::All hail Tim!::: All Hail Tim!::: :celebrate Let the celebrations begin!! :celebrate

    Seriously, Tim... thanks so much for helping us out, I would not have been able to do this on my own... anything I can I do in return?
